Just experienced a miscarriage. I wonder if anyone might know how the body disposes of the pregnancy hormones - is it the livers job to clear them?
Yes, the liver is responsible for breaking down excess hormones. The metabolites are then broken down further by the intestinal flora.
The liver also requires B vitamins for the proper breakdown of these excess hormones. Therefore, foods high in B vitamins or B vitamin supplements can help the liver with this. Bitters can also be used to cleanse the liver so it does a more efficient job of breaking down the hormones.
I ask because I have candida along with sluggish liver function and I noticed some of my "liver" symptoms are returning. I am only guessing but could the pregnancy hormones be over-loading my liver making my symptoms worse? Thanks for any information.
For the Candida cultured foods can help with getting the overgrowth under control. Cultured foods include kefir, miso, tempeh, sauerkraut, etc.
You will also need to feed the beneficial bacteria from these cultured foods. Rice bran and oat bran are both good choices to feed the flora and both are good sources of B vitamins to help the liver do its job.
Thank you that is very helpful and useful information. Liver must be doing reasonably ok - my pregnancy hormones were up at 2800 - they are now down at 167 (since miscarrying). My poor liver must be working very hard! Feel very emotional as my liver tries to balance hormones, think its drained me out too. The "B" vitamins sound like they may help alot. May need some iron rich foods but short on ideas - tried some grilled steak but dont care much for red meat - was told it contained iron.
Yes, red meats contain heme iron, which is easier to absorb than plant iron.
Taking vitamin C with it will help with absorption.
Calcium, chromium and tannins (coffee, tea, etc.) inhibit the absorption of iron.
