I think you need to try and treat both simultaneously. Treating the adrenals will help restore mucosal immunity. I think this often gets overlooked as people tend to focus on pathogens and go into "kill" mode.
The adrenals and the thyroid are heavily involved in digestion and the immune system and left untreated, will make recovery difficult. You can kill yeast all day long, but if you don't tend to the endocrine system, relapse will be inevitable.
You can support and tonify the adrenals as you fight candida. However, I would stop short of any hormone replacement therapy that is immuno-suppresive.
With regard to diet, I think you should search for a balance, compromise enough to avoid hypoglycemia--try to eat something every three hours. The idea with the candida diet is to avoid spikes in your blood sugar, while keeping it at a healthy level.
Part of treating AF is changing your response to stress. Adaptogens are very helpful with this, as is attention to proper breathing from the diaphragm. Meditation and proper breathing helped me big time. People who are chronically ill tend to breathe from the chest. Simply breathing from the diaphragm will increase intestinal lymph circulation by a factor of 15. Some call the diaphragm the "heart" of the intestines.
Accupuncture and Yoga are viable alternatives if you have trouble meditating.
Other things I found helpful for AF:
1.
Sea Salt /Trace Minerals
2. B Complex
3. Vitamin C plus Pantothenic Acid/Pantethine
4. Phosphatidylserine in the evening
5. Theanine/Valerian at night
6. Melatonin at night
7. Licorice Tea
8. Jarrow Adrenal Optimizers (amazing product full of adaptogens)
9. DHEA
10. Fish, Flax, Evening Primrose Oil
11. Multivitamin, Mineral
12. Proline
13. Sunlight
14. Moderate Exercise
It's also important to try not to become isolated. Being chronically ill and isolation seem to go hand in hand. Try and stay connected with friends, laugh every day, and try to do something you enjoy every day, even if you have to force yourself. It will help in the long run.
