Hey everyone, I have the old lh chihuahua, he will be 17 in August. I have written before, probably asking about cataracts or seizures.
Anyway--I/we found out by mistake that he was NOT as feeble and seemingly old as we thought.
I was out of town and had some family members drop in and feed him while I was away. Well, he got fed more often than usual, and when I returned we just kept feeding him that extra meal per day.
He is a new dog!
Some of that feebleness must have been from low blood sugar, hence the seizures now and then.
Now he wags his tail, (real low lol) and even does that macho manly bark after he poops. hee hee
Yup, all he needed was one more meal per day. So I have a family member go by while I am at work to get him to eat some warmed up food. Also, with his bad eyesight, he needs to be set and re-set a few times by his dish until he finishes his meal. He may not have even gotten out of bed before to eat, not every meal I left had been finished during the day.
NOW he still pigs out when I feed him when I get home.
Food is his medicine!
Chihuahua and geriatric dogs might benefit from this. My lil' one is still very senior, but he has more strength and crossing fingers, not one seizure since the extra food. And extra love.

Hypoglycemic people can get cranky or moody when they have low blood sugar, but dogs apparently just get kinda teetery. Tottery.
Poor fella is nearly blind so we attributed his balance problems to his lack of sight and his age.
Now he can eat without tipping over. LOL. I found a cat dish holder that is small enough for him that is easier than using other things to raise the plate up to a higher level.
I think the best thing for older dogs are the heated pads. I would buy every pet owner one if I was a billionaire!
I'd say millionaire, but those pads ain't cheap LOL
I think geriatric/blind dogs are great pets, they really need a lot of love and pampering. Kinda like having a live stuffed animal. Maybe I will get a blind older dog from the rescure when this bundle of fluv moves on to greener pastures, or to the Great pee pad in the sky.

in need when time comes. Is not easy, we had a dog
partly blind and it takes a lot of adjustments.
Now we have a dog that is 9, adopted when 7, because
everyone wants a puppy and we thought we could handle an older dog.
I did look at dogs with other problems but I was not ready
for it. When I look back our dog was sick in different ways for 4 years. If there were easy answers it
would be ok but just to figure out what is best for the
animal is stress.
I don't believe to keep them alive because we want to keep
them. I never forget when I picked my dog up after leg
surgery, he ignored me like saying why did you do this to
me.
I always try to tell myself what is best for the animal, I know it is not easy, I would say stay away from the vet
they always want to try more even if it does not work.

This is a reply to # 1,746,923Yes, it is something we must be strong when it comes time, when the animal suffers too greatly. I am sorry to hear about your dog. I bet he was just groggy after his leg surgery, I am sure his spirit appreciated all you did for him. :)
Just like people, as long as they are still enjoying life, then there is no problem. I suppose if we wonder constantly if he/she should be put down, maybe that is a sign that the time has come.
For now, my little one is still enjoying his meals, wagging his tail and ordering me around lol
I think that the time I get a dog, I will make sure to have cataract surgery while they are young enough to handle the anesthesia. Seems like by the time they were bad enough to consider surgery, it was too late in this case.
The blindness was really upsetting to him at first, but now he seems to have adjusted.
I hope somebody sees my first post and before getting meds, tries to feed their dog more frequent meals if the dog is having seizures in their old age (from possible blood Sugar issues, not epilepsy or other neurological problems.) Especially combined with sight loss it may be difficult for the dogs to just get out of bed and eat. I know that happens to me when I am sick, I just stay in my warm bed! Or even if I am not sick :)

We went to a eye doctor in Fl so I called my regular vet in MA. He is very straight forward and saved my dog from
having a 2nd surgery on his leg. His experience was that most even after the surgery dogs get glaucoma (that is painfull and our dog had it), he had seen it a lot, but an eye doctor won't tell you that.
So I asked him what he would do if it was his dog he said he would not do surgery.
I feel I kept my dog going by giving him iodine.

I treat my dog as I would myself. Would I want to be kept alive? If the answer is yes, then I do what I can. Dogs are like children, and sometimes children don't understand or appreciate what is good for them.
When I first started giving Baka Aruvedic herbs every day in big capsules, he didn't like it. But soon he felt much better, so he understood what they were for, and now he still doesn't like it, but he takes them without a fuss.

MoreThis is a reply to # 1,747,158I thought I heard a bird chirping in the back room at my vet's when I went to pick him up after a dental cleaning, come to find out that was my dog making those sounds!
He was NOT happy after that dental, he was miserable as could be, I swear he said his first word: HELP. that was so sad.
BUT he needed to have that cleaning and he may be too old later to handle the anesthesia.
It needed to be done, but he did not have a good time!
At least with kids we can explain things, but babies and animals don't understand why they have to go through these things. It is sad.

This is a reply to # 1,747,347Believe me, I don't like going to the dentist either! Life is not a constant bowl of cherries for anyone. When I lived in CA Baka got his teeth cleaned (anesthetic free) every month. Now that I am in MD, that is not available, so he gets it done twice a year...it was easier on him once a month because he was used to it and his dentist was his buddy, but he tolerates it ... a little better then I do I think. Actually he's kind of funny. Normally he has big, happy hellos for everyone he sees, even total strangers, but he takes one look at his new dentist, who is sitting on the floor waiting for him with all her teeth cleaning stuff, and he turns around and heads for the door..., once the cleaning starts, however, he behaves.
I don't know what you mean by herbs being an acquired taste. He takes them in capsules, so there is very little taste. But it is a discipline swallowing them. I just put a little softened butter on them and down they go.
He has Hashimotos and even tho he takes thyroid hormones, I have to watch his health like a hawk.

This is a reply to # 1,746,915Heat pads for old dogs are wonderful. I have a 20 year old Jack Russell terrier, and he has a heat pad and a sheepskin in his bed, all winter.
He doesn't get as stiff and cranky in the morning, when he sleeps on the heat pad and sheepskin.
I have found also that he benefits from a raw egg for breakfast, as well as his evening meal. He is very active, even though he is a bit of an old coot now :)
I think that our dear old ones have given us the most wonderful companionship and love, over their lives, and we owe it to them to make their twilight years, as comfortable, healthy, and happy as we can.

This is a reply to # 1,747,350I do give him iodine, 2 drops in his water bowl. I've been giving him CS for his fatty tumours, they have reduced in size, but have not gone completely.
Its very very hot today, so I will be setting up the paddle pool for him, to cool him down, he, like me, does not like the hot weather.
I also give my old fellow fish oil, or fresh fish, which ever I have, and this seems to help him a lot.
Have you tried warm water physio with you old guy? It worked wonders for my fellow, after he had a stroke last January. (he is fully recovered, no paralysis at all).

This is a reply to # 1,746,837It would hurt to put some supplements in his food too. Vitamins, liver support herbs or organ issues, digestive enzymes. I also grind up some flax seeds for myself each morning and put a portion of that in my dog's breakfast.
The herbs he gets in capsule form, although Standard Process makes a liver product that can go in the food. The rest I put in his food...he doesn't even know its there.
