Okay..so I'm on my Day 20 of the water fast and I feel okay but I really don't like being inactive. I want to workout and just be outdoors and enjoy the summer but with this water fast I can't do any of that really. I'm at home, spitting up extra saliva, feeling nausea ALL the time, bad taste in mouth, feeling weak, no BM's.. the list goes on.
Hi 496 :). Congrats on 20 days, that is awesome. Feeling nausia really makes it hard to continue and yours sounds more consistent than anything i have ever experienced, so above all i truly empathize with you. Nevertheless, if at all possible it would be ideal to ride this fast out at least until the nausia has passed since it is most undesirable to break the fast in the midst of such an unresolved crisis... something you will see consistently throughout the literature.
Everything you seek will be awaiting you whenever you decide to break... working out, absense of nausia, a nice taste in your mouth, feeling strong and having bm's :). It's really up to you but a big part of being able to fast successfully to our goals is finding the patience within ourselves to await these blessings.
Regarding the bm's, i mentioned before that i fasted for 36.5 days without a single movement, something that is well within the realm of normalcy and according to Dr. Shelton and other fasting experts there is nothing to be concerned about in this area.
If I juice fast, will I gain weight? I'll be working out too so will my weight continue to drop?
Weight has many facets and I would only be concerned about the specific type of weight. Eventually you will eat solid foods and at that time you will gain intestinal contents at the very least along with a certain amount of temporary water loss. However, if you keep caloric consumption below caloric expenditure, you will not only avoid gaining fat but continue to lose more... and such continued fat loss can definately be achieved on a juice diet... and all the more so when you're working out.
Also important is that once we begin eating (including juicing) and we are no longer in ketosis, that we not eat so far below our caloric expenditure that we are burning muscle... it might be impressive on the scale, but this type of weight we truly don't want to be losing : ).
Will my body still be in detox mode?
Yes, but not as aggressive a detox as with water-only which is said to cleanse and heal us about 3 times faster than juicing.
Will I have more energy?
Under most circumstances you absolutely will... it can make a night and day difference... but the one exception would be breaking the fast in mid-crisis. If you are feeling sick, drinking anything but water can actually make you feel weaker and sicker and thus in most such instances our body would be better off continuing to fast.
Best wishes unto you : ).
Hi SunTzu!! Can you believe this nausea situation with me?? I sound like a broken record, it's all I complain about lol But in all seriousness, this is really making my water fast experience so crappy. I want to reap ALL the benefits trust me I do, but with how I feel it makes me so miserable I could cry. I can't even go out to the mall or to a movie without feeling like I want to puke. This is an every day thing with me. I have tried to dig up some information about this but none like mine. How long did you experience nausea for, if any?
Hi 496 :). I believe i had a very small taste of it somewhere around day 24, but it was very short lived and my primary episode of nausia hit at 31.8 days and continued for about 4.5 days through day 36.5. Truly nausia took my beautiful fast and made the final few days miserable, so i can only begin to imagine how terrible it is for you to experience this horrific symptom every day. I waited through the 4.5 days of misery (taking my own advice), but eagerly snatched up the first non-nausia opportunity to break the fast! Hopefully you will have the same opportunity.

...During your 30+ days on your previous fast, have you craved fresh fruits? These days, it's ALL I think about. I want juice, fruits, something refreshing.
In spite of zero physical hunger from the end of day 3 to the end of the fast, i was often excited thinking about (mostly organic) juices. Soon after the fast was broken i became excited about fruit and continue to be so to this day, 39 days after breaking ;).
Thanks very much for your great and helpful advice.
You're very welcome, any time :).
I haven't been drinking water like I normally should because of my nausea, I do feel thirsty but if I take a chug of water I feel sick right after. Do you have any tips for that SunTzu?
If it's me and all the more so with nausia, i would resist mild thirst for many hours...in my case i usually go dry for 15-20 hours each day (including sleep)... and allow the thirst to become moderate and persisting. In this way drinking your water should be a delight to your soul and it really shouldn't make you feel sick... it never does me. Drinking before this time, especially with nausia would make me feel ill too.
It is taught that in fasting we should drink only to thirst and i have concluded that thirst is this moderate and persisting phenomenon, not the mild hints of it that come and go.
Also you probably already do this but i would recommend always rinsing your mouth thoroughly with water before drinking so it tastes less like blood or the foulness that is our mouth. Dasvidanja :).
