"My own opinion is that the inconsistancies and contradictions are perfectly understandable if the bible is a work of fiction created by man, to try and explain the unknown, at a time in history where there was limited scientific knowledge. "
According to the way I perceive your opinion everything is a work of fiction that is written, combine that with liquid truth and nothing really makes sense unless one wants it to.
Perhaps the vocabulary used was scientific at the time and it has merely been distorted by poor perception and a belief in individual truth.
here is an example of such distortions.
"This is why we see the contradictions such as the god character in the bible giving a commandment such as "thou shalt not kill" (there are no conditions attached to this commandment), and then in further chapters, this same god character sanctioning killing."
First of the characterizations are words that describe the existance of God, they are no different than when anything else is characterized through description. I understand that you are dead set on your perception of such characterization so I will move on from there, as we have delved into that topic before. The perception is backwards we have the character of God not the other way around. I suppose that is par for the course when the truth is liquid.
Now, what sanctioning are you speaking of specifically? The translations that use the word sanction are few and none refer to God sanctioning anything. By creating our existance God has created laws that help to maintain Life, these laws are necessary for our continued existance. If this is the sanctions you speak of then, God has sanctioned everything that exists. What of it?
