Colloidal silver. Put it in your cat's drinking water and it will help kill off infection in the teeth and gums. Not only that, even at 23 you may notice increased vitality.
If you can, try to massage and/or brush the silver into the cats teeth and gums. If not, just put it in the water.
Here is an article that might be helpful regarding brushing/massaging the teeth:

Also, if you consider any other items first check to make sure they are safe for cats. Some items you might consider for humans or even dogs are toxic to cats. For example, tea tree oil, aloe vera and garlic are all toxic for cats. Oil of oregano might be a possibility, though it will likely sting and that might not go over too well with a cantankerous cat.
All the best,

THANK you for the great suggestions! I'll give him a spray of CS, this evening on he poor teefs. I've been giving him canned food for about 6 months, now, because it does hurt his teefs to bite down on crunchies. We attribute him for being present when the Big Bang occurred. Golly he is an old man!
Adding silica to his water is a great start to help strengthen what is left of the teeth as well as connective tissues throughout the body. This includes the tubules in the kidneys, which are a primary problem area for cats. A diet that is too alkaline can damage a cat's kidneys. So the canned moist foods, which tend to be higher in protein would be better diet wise and would be easier for the cat to eat.
