Have a cat that's 23. We adopted him when he was 15 and the previous owner had fed him canned food for nearly his entire life. We put him on a dry food diet and took him off of the bagful of pills that she gave us. The vet that had prescribed them was actually someone that I worked for, so I knew that they saw this lady coming.
So now he's 23, cantankerous, and his teeth are absolutely rotten. His breath smells horrid and due to a number of reasons we can't take him to have his teeth pulled. At 23 we also feel that anethesia would likely kill him.
What can we do to make him comfortable? He still dashes around the house and bosses everyone around, but he's obviously uncomfortable.
