I looked through their website and did not see the chemical analysis, but being that it is 84% silica tells me that it is raw DE. Raw DE has roughly an 80% silica content with the rest of the mineral content being primarily calcium oxide, magnesium oxide, and aluminum oxide. Even though silica binds with aluminum for removal from the body there is the risk of the aluminum binding to other substances such as proteins hormones and therefore I prefer to use purified DE. Purified DE is treated with acid to remove the metal oxides then washed and dried. Other than raw material suppliers though I am not sure where to get it.
Is there a difference between food grade and purified DE?
Food grade should be purified. If the metal oxides have not been removed I don't think it should be listed as food grade.
Where do you get your DE, Hv?
From raw material suppliers for the supplement industry. They don't sell to the general public though.
Another question... I did purchase a 1.5 lb. box of "Concern" brand DE. There is no grade mentioned on the box, but it does say it is OK for organic gardens. The ingredient list says: Silicon dioxide from DE, 85%, other elemental oxides, 10%, moisture 5.0%. Is this OK to use for drinking? If not, I will use it for bug control. Thanks for all your answers, everyone!
The metal oxides means it still has the aluminum.
Hi.
Great forum you have here!
I wonder if the Wolfcreekranch is Ok to use.
(I just orded a new pack from them, and they ship to Europe)

It is still raw, unpurified DE. And I still think they should not be calling raw DE "food grade". I think they do that because we get many of the elements in the DE in our food anyway in the same or higher levels.
After all of this .....Is it safe to take the Perma-guard brand?I bought 50 pounds of the stuff to share with family and friends so tell me please.
Being that the silica binds and removes aluminum then the risk is very likely to be minimal if at all. I am thinking about looking more in to the silicon citrate again. I have been using this in my water as an alternative to DE and I like it. But I have not looked at the analysis for it yet. It should be purified before reaction with the citric acid.
And if I can ask one more question on DE.Has anyone taken DE on a plane when travelling?I'm going on vacation soon and don't want to miss my DE for two weeks. But my hubby said no way am I taking that stuff on the plane before it is mistaken for some kind of drugs and we don't get to our destination!!!
It does look like drugs. And even though they can taste it to see it is not a drug you wold have to find someone to do that and all it still takes is one official having a bad day. I would not risk it. Mail a small amount to your destination ahead of time as long as it does not have to go through customs.
Pray tell me wise ones.
Do let us know about your silicon citrate and the benefits you experience HV.Much obliged.
I have been using the silcon citrate in my water for about a year now. It has the same effect on my nails as the DE does, hardening them. So other than being cleaner there should be no difference between the citrate and DE. In fact DE is most likely the starting point for silicon citrate as it is for most silica supplements.
I read it has 89% silicon and 4% aluminum. Is that safe to drink? I also bought 50lbs from them and have been drinking it for almost a year.
Would you use it like you said to in tiny amounts to fix RO water if you had 50 lbs?
Where do we go for guidelines of safe minerals in water? Do we trust the FDA or our city reports?
