Vitamin c mega dose

I started mega dosing on vitamin c a few days ago. About 10 grams, give or take. I use a sorbic acid powder from trader joes. A day or 2 after my left bicep started twitching. It was kind of weird watching my hole muscle move by itself without me flexing. Now i get a slight twitch in the area that goes on and off the entire day. Some times i feel a little something weird in my forarm, almost a tiredness from all the twitching. My heart does a little racing now and then. Never really had these problems before.
I'm wondering if this is attributed to the vitamin c mega dose i'm experimenting with.
Anyone else experience something like this? Can any body chime in with some info?

I would never use unbuffered ascorbic acid if I would use it at all, there is some real junk out there passing itself of as vitamin C.

MoreThis is a reply to # 1,429,994More than likely it is. Back of the dose and see if it goes away. The twitching is probably from magnesium or potassium loss. Up dose of magnesium (use magnesium chloride) and try some potassium or increase dietary levels.
It is possible that the vit c is detoxing and may be mobilizing toxins out of your system thus raising your metabolic rate which in turn would deplete electrolytes (mag/potassium etc. ) - Re: Vitamin c mega dose Hveragerthi

MoreThis is a reply to # 1,429,994Muscle twitching is most often from an excess of calcium, a muscle contractor, and a lack of magnesium, a muscle relaxant. So there are a couple of possibilities here. Either the vitamin C is buffered with calcium, or the high vitamin C dose is causing diarrhea leading to a magnesium loss.
When the heart races are the beasts regular or irregular? If regular a racing heart is normally from either an increase in epinephrine output or a drop in blood pressure. An irregular heartbeat is most often caused by decreased blood flow to the heart, which causes cardiac irritability. This causes other cells in the heart to try and act like nodes (ectopic pacemakers) than throw the rhythm off. Again high calcium and lack of magnesium can cause this.

Everyone knows calcium is an essential mineral and anyone with a little knowledge about mineral ratios knows that calcium and magnesium work hand in hand at a 2:1 ratio !
I think you should read these posts a little closer, ascorbic acid is ascorbate acid its not an ascorbate or buffered with anything!

You really need to do your homework. It is not only well known that calcium is a muscle contractor, but I have psoted a ton of evidence to this on these boards in the past. And yes, it is essential just like oxygen. And just like oxygen it can be problematic if there is too much of it. Why do you think they use calcium channel blockers to lower blood pressure? Why do you think rigormortis occurs when someone dies? Simple, it is because calcium is causing muscle contractions.
As far as the 2:1 ratio this has been in debate for MANY years. Please keep up with current research!!! For many conditions caused from high serum calcium the magnesium intake actually needs to EXCEED the calcium intake. For example in many cases of muscle cramping, heart arrhythmias, some cases of high blood presusre, spastic bladder.......I think you should read these posts a little closer, ascorbic acid is ascorbate acid its not an ascorbate or buffered with anything!

And many people don't know the difference between ascorbic acid and an ascorbate. Yourself for example. But many people know that vitamin C is often referred to as ascorbic acid, and think that products like Ester-C are still ascorbic acid when in fact they are ascorbates. So don't assume that you know exactly what he was taking when you really don't know for sure unless you are now going to claim you are psychic.

I mentioned his symptoms could be from TOO MUCH CALCIUM and A LACK OF MAGNESIUM, which because the calcium is a muscle contractor can lead to the muscle twitching and arrhythmias. The vitamin c i'm using from trader joes only has ascobic acid listed as an ingredient. Not sure how great the quality is. (can someone recommend a good quality. I was looking at the vitamin c foundation brand.)
The heart racing thing i think is a regular heart beat. Hasn't happened in a few days.
I haven't been taking enough vitamin c to get diarrhea. This is how one finds their bowl tolerance correct?
The twitch has gone from the entire bicep moving as if i'm flexing to more of an annoying small twitch that is barely visible.
I have been taking magnesium citrate from "NOW" products. I take the dosage recommendation which equates to 1500mg.
Also i'm not taking any calcium

This is a reply to # 1,430,293Well if the symptoms stop when you stop taken the mega doses of ascorbic acid I suggest rethinking what you are doing or trying to accomplish! Perhaps look into whether or not this ascorbic acid is genetically modified corn sugars and perhaps look into full spectrum minerals that include all the macro and trace elements! This is how food brings us our essential nutrients, not one at a time!

In the four or five years I have been here I have seen this trend increase! What a shame ! I however hope those whose health is effected by these decisions will understand this is the same misinformation the establishment medical industry (a failing industry by the way) promotes!

Is magnesium chloride better then the magnesium citrade i'm taking?
The twitching only occurs when i'm not active/lounging. When i work out or ride my bike it goes away.

Right. For me ascorbic acid is the only C that I can tell has made a difference in my condition. I've taken over thirty grams, and still have not reached bowel intolerance. My health has improved and no side effects that I can think of. I've had musle twitching on ocassion, when I was sicker. Don't think it was related to the C. - Re: Hveragerthi is right JustinL

Finally something we agree on. Citric acid is one of those benefical acids to the body that I have been mentioning. Both citric acid and malic acid, used to make magnesium malate, are used to generate ATP, the fuel for our cells.

Ascorbic acid is ascorbic acid. They are all formed from sugars, and all of these synthetics are extremely unstable. There are only a couple of manufacturers and these are sold to raw material suppliers who then private label the same exact product. So there is basically no difference between brands. The only differences would be added bioflavonoids, or buffering to make different ascorbates.
The best C is from natural sources, which are not only stronger, but also more stable. The best foods sources are watercress, kiwis, papaya, and berries. he best herbal sources are amla berry, acerola cherry and sea buckthorn.

Anyhow the discussion has been provoking. I would mention to you and Hveragerthi that everyone is going to respond to different forms of minerals differently. Chloride has worked very well for me and in general terms it is superior (Dr. Mildred Seelig, MD)

This is a reply to # 1,430,762I guess whether or not the chloride is superior is a matter of opinion. I personally disagree and prefer magnesium malate as the malic acid also helps the cells to function properly. This is why magnesium malate is the form of magnesium used to treat fibromyalgia.
