I hope I have come to the right place...
I was on Depo Provera shot for nearly 7 years. My last shot was in August, 2008 and I had Mirena inserted in October 2008 (it sounded so much better than the shot). The insertion was very painful, but I have never had children, so that may be why. I am 31 years old. I do not want children in the next 3 years...but maybe some day.
I have had Mirena for 3 months now. I've read a lot, and understand there are a ton of side effects. Well, here is what I am feeling now: I'm terrified I may be pregnant due to these symptoms...but yet with 7 years on Depo, I hardly beleive that can be true! I have intensly tender breasts, I am a walking cramp! Constant abdominal tenderness and bloating, same with the back pain, I cry A LOT, I have some nausea and am more tired these days.
I am going to my old family doctor today to have some bloodwork done and a pregnancy test just to be sure. My fear (other than pregnancy which is WHY I got Mirena)...is all the talk of perforation and/or infections.
I can not "feel" the "strings" anymore...and my last visit to the doctor who put it in said she could NOT see them (but said it didn't matter, as that happens to some women??). But from what I've read, if the strings retract it means it's out of place...did anyone else's strings retract and everything was still in place??
Of course, also on my mind is that people say Mirena can take up to 6 months to normalize. AND technically I think my body is still coming down from the Depo shot I had 5 months ago. Should I wait this out??
Sigh. I'm sorry to just spill all this...I just don't know what to do.

This is a reply to # 1,348,262I developed horrible anxiety and mild Depression on mirena. You said you cry a lot, sounds very familiar. And it sounds like you are sensitive to it, some women aren't. MoreThis is a reply to # 1,348,262I thought you had to have gone through a pregnancy to have it so that it would fit coorectly? I had super sore breasts and lots of underarm pain. The doctor had me wait it out. It would come and go, but was horrible since I always thought about cancer. I ended up havind a mammogram and that looked fine, but have been so much happier with it out. I was not able to feel my strings because the doctor had cut them so short because my husband kept feeling them. I think it's horrible if you can't feel them though, because then how are you supposed to know if it's in the right spot? This was a horrible device for me with tons of symptoms. If I were you I would get it out now before it causes more problems.

This is a reply to # 1,348,407I thought the same thing....Aren't you supposed to have had at least one child before getting this inserted???
I had anxiety, hair loss, vertigo, depression, mood swings, no sex drive, mysterious chest pains that were unexplained, and just an overall feeling of doom and gloom. I stayed in my bedroom for months if I wasn't at work. I did nothing, went nowhere, and was just at a stage of depression, that the next step would have been suicide. I found this forum, and within 3 days, got it removed. It wasn't an instant return to health, but now 8 1/2 months later, I'm feeling much better. I still get some anxiety, but I don't take anything for because I'm able to control it. And right before my cycle, I tend to get some vertigo. But I can deal with that!!!!! This is a reply to # 1,348,414I was told I didn't need to have had a child first, it just makes the insertion easier because the cervix would have experienced "opening". The insertion was so painful...I can't imagine what child birth would be like!
I keep wanting the symptoms to subside...Mirena sounded like such a miracle birth control! I'm so happy I found this site. If no one minds, I'll post my outcome in the next few days after I see my MD. Thanks again!- Re: Mirena Questions fatfluffcat

I do hope it will normalize in a few more weeks...I just need to know what I'm going through IS the Mirena. However, speaking of the pulling it part...as my "strings" are not visable...I'm so scared of the pain to (eventually) get it out.

This is a reply to # 1,348,430I was always told with IUD's that you had to have been pregnant to get one, b/c your cervix/uterus would be stretched out enough to handle it. I can't imagine inserting one if you haven't been--I keep reading about women having excruciating insertions and I think this is why....
It's like all the rules changed with the stupid Mirena...5 years? what is that? old IUD lasted 10-15 years...and ovarian cysts are NORMAL??!! Who are they trying to kid--they are pushing this thing on EVERYONE and it's supposed to be the answer to everything.
sigh...
I hope your symptoms subside, but if they don't--print out what you have read here and take it to your Dr. if he/she gives you any guff about your symptoms!!

This is a reply to # 1,348,461I thought I'd let you know how the doctor appointment went. First, I should say my regular family doctor is NOT the one who put in the Mirena. My normal doctor sent me to the second one for the Mirena only. So today's appointment was with my family doctor. She is wonderful. She listened to everything. She does not believe I could be pregnant either (but we did bloodwork to be sure), she does believe all this is because of Mirena. She said some people react well, some do not. She arranged for a pelvic ultrasound for tomorrow just so we can be sure it is properly in place. We decided on an action plan of no more than 3 months (less if need be). Assuming all is good with my test results, I'm going to give my body a few more weeks to adjust. If I do not, or help me, if things get worse, I will have it removed...then yell from the bloodly roof tops how much this thing S**KS! :-)
Thanks for listening. Reading this site is the only thing that's made me feel better in days!

This is a reply to # 1,348,625Just remember that a lot of people's symptoms don't start happening until a year into it. I had mine for 14 months before I realized I had lost my appetite, my throat felt like it was closing, I had reflux and a lump in my stomach, I was forgetting things and felt like my head was in a fog, I had been diagnosed with carpal tunnel, and I had an unneeded mammogram. Since it's been out I've had a swallow study, colonoscopy, EGD, CT scan, ultrasound and still feel like crap. Even with insurance, those are expensive test. I lost 20# in the 1st month after having it out because I couldn't eat. I went back to my obgyn over the year and 2 times he convinced me to keep it. I wish I had listened to my gut. I wouldn't wish how I've been feeling on my worst enemy. It's amazing when you start messing with hormones how they can affect your body. This Mirena causes some to have menopausal symptoms which are horrible. You might want to do some looking into that. Also, I didn't realize how they can affect the GI system. I now know that my reasons for having diarrhea in the past are because of the ortho tri cyclin lo I used to take. It all makes since now. Good luck to you!

This is a reply to # 1,348,75414 months?!!? Oh god. There might be more to come? My best friend also has Mirena, but she's had 2 kids. She has no side effects what-so-ever, and she's had it 6 months now. I suppose she's one of the lucky ones...so far! I also reacted with GI disorders to The Pill. It took nearly 2 years of a gluten free diet to clear that up!
I laid in bed bawling last night...I keep wondering why I did this to myself...oh yeah, so I wouldn't have to WORRY. A lot of good that did. Even though I'm going to try to keep Mirena another few weeks, I'm stressing now about the removal. Since my strings retracted, I keep wondering how they are going to get it out...and what could go wrong. Sigh. This is rough.- Re: Mirena Questions mamaj

This is a reply to # 1,348,922all my symptoms were progressive, and they crept up SLOWLY.....-it was in the last year (had it almost the full 5) that I got the worst. My theory is that our progesterone levels decline naturally as we age-so mirena just help it along. I had no noticable side effect the 1st 6 months, and it was 2 years before the bad "physical" ones showed up.

This is a reply to # 1,348,922As long as the device is in the right spot, I bet they can still reach it and just pull on the plastic part. My strings couldn't be felt, they sent me for an ultrasound which showed it was in the right spot, and they had no problem getting it out. It took 2 seconds.

This is a reply to # 1,348,988I'm glad you feel better. Do you mind telling me what GI symptoms led you to do a gluten free diet? I don't have diarrhea, but have tons of air in my gut and mild pain on and off. They tell me it's IBS, but I know that diagnosis doesn't mean much. I was hoping it would gradually go away, but it's terrible to hear that it took you 2 years...

This is a reply to # 1,348,988that made me feel better too! after finding this forum, i decided to try to remove mine by myself. well, of course, i can't find the dang strings. i was so upset thinking that i may have to have surgery to have it removed. so, thanks karita!
also, i just wanted to say that i hope you do 'adjust' since i can understand your hesitancy to have it removed so soon. however, i think it's important to keep in mind what mamaj said. i have had this thing for the full five years now, and reading her list of symptoms has simply saved me the time of listing them all myself. they are the same! i didn't start out feeling this way, it has slowly gotten progressively worse - this last year especially. (my whole body hurts ALL the time.) until i found this site, though, i had no idea this IUD was the culprit. so i guess what i'm saying is, if you do decide to keep it you may want to take note of any unusual feelings, aches & pains, etc. so you can be aware of what this thing is doing to you.

This is a reply to # 1,348,998I love this site! LOL! I just came back from my ultra sound, and yes, the little suc*** is still firmly in place, regardless that the strings retracted. Also confirmed my uterus is in "good shape" (sounds good to me) and no fibroids were seen.
I will heed the advice here and make a list of my symptoms NOW so I can adjust the list accordingly as time passes. Good luck to me over the next few weeks. I will be sure to post my status!!
Karita, regarding the GI problems. I believe the source of mine was from many high-school years on the Pill. So in essence, estrogen was the culprit. It started by causing me terrible vaginal yeast infections that simply would not go away. The yeast (or "candida" if you are researching) multiplied quickly and took over my intestines hence causing awful GI upset. Nausea, constipation, fatigue and a general overall feeling of ickiness. I spent nearly $5000 trying to get everything diagnosed.(and I'm from Canada where we apparently have Health Care services! LOL!). I was initially told IBS, but later found out that's what they say when they don't know!! Once we found candida was at fault, I went to a Naturopath who cut all gluten from my diet as well as dairy for 6 full months. I couldn't believe how rapidly I improved. I'm now back to eating "some" gluten/wheat but certainly not daily. I became slightly lactose intolerant by avoiding dairy for 6 months, but really, I probably consumed too much before anyway! If you would like to discuss further, or need more info, please let me know. I have YEARS worth of reasearch on candida and am MORE than happy to share!!!

I posted almost the exact same thing that you did regarding the unbelieveable pain during insertion and the problems I had up until I had it removed. My message is further down the page. My strings disappeared but the Mirena was in place. Still I could not stand the pain and bleeding any longer waiting for it to come out so they had to surgically remove it.
But seriously, don't you just want to go off on your doctor when they tell you to RIDE IT OUT for three to six months until things settle?! Yeah right. YOU try to ride out this pain and discomfort. And isn't the whole point of getting the Mirena for us to be able to have great sex and not have to worry about getting pregnant? Who wants to have sex when you're randomly bleeding and in pain all the time; your libido took a vacation; you feel hideous because of all of the zits on your face; your back is aching like you got hit by a truck; and your hair is falling out!? I think I'm starting to see the REAL concept of the Mirena: It makes you feel like such crap that you DON'T WANT to have sex, therefore you can't get pregnant. tada
