Homeless people living in cars and motorhomes across the US are being joined by a new breed: the middle class.
As mortgage foreclosures continue to rise, growing numbers of middle-class professionals are losing their homes and downsizing from four bedrooms to four wheels.
With numbers rising, New Beginnings, a homeless agency in Santa Barbara, California, has launched a safe parking scheme, whose aim is to provide a refuge of sorts for those who have nowhere to go other than their vehicle.
Guy Trevor lost his job as an interior designer when the sector contracted thanks to the foreclosure crisis. With his furniture sold and his belongings in storage, he now lives in his car, spending the nights in one of the 12 gated car parks in Santa Barbara run by New Beginnings.
"I see myself as a casualty of a perfect storm," he said. "The people sleeping at the [car parks] are ... just like me. They come from normal, everyday homes. I think a lot of people in this country don't realise that they, too, are a couple of pay cheques away from destitution."
In normally affluent Santa Barbara there were 150 foreclosures last month, with a total of 800 for the year ending in May, according to the county assessor's office, which assesses property for tax purposes.
Each month, an auction of foreclosed properties is held on the steps of the Santa Barbara courthouse.
"The way the economy is going, it's amazing the people who are becoming homeless. It's hit the middle class," Nancy Kapp, of New Beginnings, told CNN.
Another of Kapp's clients, Barbara Harvey, 67, also lost her job and subsequently her home thanks to the foreclosure crisis. As with Trevor, her job as a loans processor was connected to the housing market.
Harvey now lives with her three dogs in her car, parking at night in a women-only car park run by the agency. "I didn't think this would happen to me," she said. "It's just something that I don't think that people think is going to happen to them."
The rise in the number of homeless people sleeping in cars has led to a clampdown in Los Angeles. In common with many US cities, it is illegal to live in vehicles on public streets. This year the city banned almost all overnight parking on residential streets. A first violation receives a $50 (£25) fine, while subsequent offences carry fines of up to $100.
"For more working class and lower middle class people, the car is the first stop of being homeless, and sometimes it turns out to be a long stop," Gary Blasi, a University of California, Los Angeles, law professor and homelessness activist told the Associated Press.
The city has the highest number of homeless people in the US, with an estimated 73,000 living rough. A survey last year of more than 3,000 of them showed that 250 were sleeping in their cars.

This is a reply to # 1,203,235I think this shows how valuable a good relationship with an extended family can be. I can think of many relatives who would take me in rather than let me live in my car. We keep in touch with 2nd and 3rd cousins and even more distant relatives, which I understand is somewhat unusual these days.

Welcome to the New World Order - where the goal is to create a small upper class of the elite serviced by a large servant class of poor, with the middle class virtually eliminated.
As we continue to finance a war to make Iraq safe for big oil (and one has only to look at the numbers on the gas pumps and at the record prices in the financial news to see how much concern big oil has for our fate) and print new money to prop up the economy with stimulus packages we cannot afford, and while we bail out the loan sharks with money the government does not have, the dollar and our standard of living can only suffer. And it will only get much, much worse when the tab finally, inevitably comes due.
Someday we will have to pay that price for our economic sins by lowering our standards of living as our real money is siphoned off to our creditors - China and the international bankers. And then comes the next blows along the wonderful road to a New World Order. And, at every step along the way, the middle class shrinks and the poor, servant class grows.
The next blow, as planned, is the formation of the North American Union (which is proceeding apace inspite of the wishes of our citizens) - where the standards of living of Canada, the United States and Mexico will reach an equilibrium, resulting in a huge downward adjustment to our real incomes and standards of living. What remains of the middle class will likely be mostly the remnants present upper middle class and a great portion of the lower wealthy class who will have a rude awakening when they find out that what their place will ultimately be in the New World Order.
After the North American Union and other planned world unions are formed, if all goes according to plan, it will not take long for everyone to find their place in where the new reality of economics and power of the world is headed - because the final blow will soon come when, just as has been planned and executed right under our noses, various world unions are joined under one ruling body. For what will probably be more than 98% of the world's population, freedoms and money will be few and far between.
Folks, this has been coming for a long, long time. It has been tried and thwarted before, but this time all the right pieces appear to be in all the right places - and one of the biggest pieces of all is the lethargy and ignorance of the American middle class, even as that class dries up around their economic necks.

Four of the western world's largest oil corporations signing contracts for the renewed exploitation of Iraq's vast reserves along with those wonderful photos you posted of the oil pipeline running to and through Israel and protected by our military bases tell us all we need to know about why American soldiers lives and our economy has been sacrificed: Making the Middle East safe for Big Oil and Halliburton and giving Israel control over a huge oil pipeline.

This "middle class" will include the pseudo rich... those that appear to have money, but who in reality, have far more liabilities than assets.
Check out any bankruptcy court. Outside of those who are there due to a medically induced bankruptcy (pharmedico taking it all), are ALL, at least in my experience, those who put on the show without the dough.
In addition, I believe that upper middle class individuals, who have been in the know about this whole mess, have eliminated debt, while increasing their self sufficiency (edible landscaping; perhaps a bit of livestock), have bartering skills AND a decent stash of real currency (gold\silver?) will possibly weather the storm... and may just survive.
That is assuming the "man" does not come in and confiscate it all... a real possibility if things get nasty.

When and if the ultimate whip comes down, the ruling elite will be but a mere comparative handful. They and their most valued members may number no more than 20,000 or so worldwide. The next level of privilege will be the new middle class - the managers and overseers who make sure that the luxuries and industries of the ruling elite are taken care of. The remaining, greatly reduced population of the world will be the servant class of workers. Communism and socialism have always been the models and Communist China has been THE model.
The clearly stated plans and goals of the New World Order are to have a total world population of about 500 million, which would be a 90 plus percent reduction in the current population level. The main questions would appear to be how are they to achieve such a huge population reduction as well as achieve the "dumbing down" and willingness of the masses to enable the population reduction and insure obedient servility by those who remain?
Forced vaccinations and forced participation by the masses into mainstream medicine and the drug labs of the World Pharma industry come to mind (and make no mistake, those who own World Pharma are part of the planned elite). Perhaps even moreso, the answer may be found by simply looking up - looking past the cameras we see at every intersection and into the sky. Aren't all those plane trails a beautiful site?
Perhaps some of us will be able to escape to the hills and wilds and remain more or less free, at least for awhile - but don't count on it. Individual freedom is not part of the plan. Nevertheless, if you are able to effect such a lifestyle you should. Gold and silver are likely good ideas too, though food and water will be far more precious mediums of trade, if you can hang on to them.
The best idea of all is to wake up and return our government to the ideals of the founders. America is the last great obstacle to the plans of world domination. If only we are not already too lulled to sleep to ever awaken again as a sleeping giant . . . and I fear that the clock is nearing the 11th hour.

This is a reply to # 1,203,235As long as one has income and a home, they take out your lungs if necessary but nothing is available to the people that work for a living.
I am gainfully employed and financially destitute by education expenses. While qualifying for NOTHING for educating my children - ONE AT A TIME. Had to have one of them stay out for 4 years while one finished, then trying to finish the second one now. That is with both the children and me working as well, and both the children taking loans and paying as well as we go along. Plus - gettting out with a debt that will last for ten years afterwards. How will this kid start up?
No housing allowance, all at our expense, no grants, and this is for only a basic college education - not law or medicine or engineering.
People in Sweden, go to university and even get expenses paid as well as medical not need to even work while they attend, all included in their innate rights.
Meanwhile, whenever we receive phone calls about our assorted bills, or IT support it is coming from another country, while so many of our own IT people and manufacturing plant employees have lost their jobs and have few options.
Wouldn't it make sense to have "customer service centers" manned by people that instead of pay will get funding for their kid's school? Or get mortgage reductions? or bill pay assistance until they find a job?
My young son and his wife may lose their house because they have one of THOSE mortgages, and now cannot qualify for refinance. Both working, both willing and with good credit, but they do not QUALIFY according to their new ridiculous specifications because their house went down in price as per new 'rules'.
It is sad to have to mortgage one's life and sanity to try to accomplish what is part of inherent rights in other places. Are we not as ingenious to create such a system?
Bah humbug, thanks for listening - just feeling raw today, and this thread touched my heart. I feel that much like "The Matrix" - the world has been hooked up to America - just suck everything out of the middle class. The best working mules.

Nobody bothers to go to work at all on mondays and fridays, the initiative such out of them as is has been out of our welfare poor. Every time my yuppie buddy leaves for the miami boat show in his inter-turbo volvo he never gets past cocoa beach before he is on the tow truck.
My college tuition at u of hawaii was $1000 for 4 yrs. in 1970. Now its$ 10,000 a year at my local junior college. the difference is the j. coll. has an indour heated olympic swimming pool and instead of the teachers doing academic advising they have a large staff, etc. to extremes. pupil to administrater ratio was 400 to 1 at U.H. in 1970 ,its 123 to 1 at the local j.c. all those women sitting around doing their nails and men watching sports on their pc's.
the problem here IS the government.The don't have to show a profit. every time Amtrak sells a ticket it costs the taxpayers of America $80.00 in subsidies, but oh yes we need more passenger trains. Still wondering where your tuition money goes?- You are totally misinformed Quinta_Essentia

as for the suicide rates, again you are completely wrong. look here, you can see that Sweeden's suicide rate is about the same as the US's and no where near the 'highest in the world'
