MoreDoes anyone know a device or anything that could keep EM fermenting at a 100 degree Fahrenheit constant temperature? For an efficient energy cost?
I've looked at thermoelectric coolers but I haven't seen any where you can adjust the temperature; You either get very warm (120-140F) or very cold (40F). Vinny says you can use a 14 watt heater source, but I don't know how that would work and what I'd use. Any ideas?- Re: EM Fermenter? finalquest

This is a reply to # 117,799Yeah, I am leaning towards the Igloo cooler box using a light bulb. How would I place the light bulb in the cooler? Would I just tape it to the top? I'm not very good with building things, obviously. I heard about using "ceramic bases", "insulation", etc as well but don't know what all that means.
I read that you can just use like a 100 watt desk lamp and put the EM like 6 inches away from it and that it would heat up to 100 degrees. Is this true? Would I need to put the EM jug in an insulated box or would it be fine ni the open?

This is a reply to # 117,800You need the temperature to be fairly uniform across the bottle of EM to get an even brew. Placing the brew near to a desk lamp will simply heat up one spot. Sure, due to convection/conduction there will be some transference but not enough.
I would purchase a powered yogurt maker, the circular tub type, put this inside a coolbox. You will need to drill a hole in the bottom of the coolbox to feed the flex through. Stick your 1.5l or 2l bottle of EM brew inside the base of the yogurt maker and put the lid on the coolbox. Job done!

This is a reply to # 117,798What my company uses for small batches of EM is a heating pad wrapped around a 5 gallon bucket. For larger batches (55 gallon) we use either a "hot box" which is a rectangular box constructed of 2"X4'X8" rigid foam board covered with clear lexan corrugated roofing. Place your black barrels in the box and the sun will warm it to over 160 degrees F and heat the water to just over 110 degrees F.
The other method we use is to employ a 35 watt water bed heater, wrapped around the barrel or tote. Over this we place foil backed bubble wrapped insulation. Works very well and allows you to maintain a constant 100 degree temp.
