I may have found a free solution for some of us. It appears to be working for me. I do NOT have sleep apnea, based on my husbands observations. But, according to my family, I used to snore like a bear, dinosaur, and loud enough to hear rooms away. I am not in the category of overweight. My BMI is in the normal range, but for my small bone structure, I probably am a little overweight. I certainly have gained 20
pounds since my 20s.
After reading a lot about snoring, and trying nose strips (didn't work) and nose pinchers (don't work), and sprays (don't work), I focused on the softness of the back of the palate throat muscles. I sometimes do an exercise that supposedly helps middle-aged women keep from having a saggy jaw: smile real wide while pushing your tongue up against the roof of your mouth. It is like swallowing really hard and you notice the underneath side of your chin going up each time. I realized one day that it also seems to tighten the area described as loose in snorers, so I have tried doing it on a daily basis before bed, say 10 times in a row. It has worked!! At least so far. It also worked almost right away. Just like exercising any muscle, it is tight for many hours after you work out. So, before bed I do that exercise and every day so far I have not snored. (This is after about 10 years of snoring, god bless my husband.) I have noticed that other people are saying that certain singing exercises help, which would be the same muscles.
I would be interested in hearing if this works for your husband. It only takes a few minutes and doesn't cost anything, so it is worth trying. Have him try it for at least 3 days in a row before giving up.
