ABSTRACTBackground
It has been hypothesized that early exposure to thimerosal, a mercury-containing preservative used in vaccines and immune globulin preparations, is associated with neuropsychological deficits in children.
Methods
We enrolled 1047 children between the ages of 7 and 10 years and administered standardized tests assessing 42 neuropsychological outcomes. (We did not assess autism-spectrum disorders.) Exposure to mercury from thimerosal was determined from computerized immunization records, medical records, personal immunization records, and parent interviews. Information on potential confounding factors was obtained from the interviews and medical charts. We assessed the association between current neuropsychological performance and exposure to mercury during the prenatal period, the neonatal period (birth to 28 days), and the first 7 months of life.
Results
Among the 42 neuropsychological outcomes, we detected only a few significant associations with exposure to mercury from thimerosal. The detected associations were small and almost equally divided between positive and negative effects. Higher prenatal mercury exposure was associated with better performance on one measure of language and poorer performance on one measure of attention and executive functioning. Increasing levels of mercury exposure from birth to 7 months were associated with better performance on one measure of fine motor coordination and on one measure of attention and executive functioning. Increasing mercury exposure from birth to 28 days was associated with poorer performance on one measure of speech articulation and better performance on one measure of fine motor coordination.
Conclusions
Our study does not support a causal association between early exposure to mercury from thimerosal-containing vaccines and immune globulins and deficits in neuropsychological functioning at the age of 7 to 10 years.

Since this tasteless joke skipped the most important symptomes (autism), most important age (after 7 monhts), and took into account only mercury (as if that's the only vax ingredient with toxic properties), the conclusion should be that they didn't find anything because they didn't look for anything. Except that they did find something but couldn't count it... so they use the "few". What's 2+2? "A few".

The study was specifically set up to look at early exposures to thimerosal-containing vaccines. That's the period in which some claim there is a particular susceptibility to this preservative. The study did not find evidence of preservative-related neuropsychological problems.

They assessed many measures of brain function. There are numerous other studies that have specifically looked at autism, and have also not found an association with thimerosal or with vaccines in general.

You apparently did not read the conclusions of the study. Both positive and negative associations with thimerosal were noted:

The bottom line is that these "associations" were small, were both positive and negative, and overall not significant.

Mercury (the thimerosal preservative that used to be routinely used in vaccines) is the ingredient that antivaxers have been harping on as an alleged cause of brain damage in vaccinated children. So naturally it's been the subject of this and many other studies refuting the theory. As the mercury theory has repeatedly been debunked, antivaxers then begin claiming (similarly without evidence) that various other components of vaccines are "toxic". This strategy is similarly doomed to failure.

It doesn't really matter what you say or think, they are here to promote an agenda while making it look like it's just someone from the crowd sharing their "honest to god" opinions.
So, don't waste your time even reading them as they are not writing their opinions; they are not allowed to think or agree with anyone who opposes vaccination. They are a part of what is known as "grey PR". Paid to quote someone else's lies. It's a job that pays well as it has a bigger effect for a lot less money then advertising or political payoffs.

This is a reply to # 1,139,580Is it possible if autism is indeed linked to a genetic component, that vaccines may be the trigger that exploits that genetic link?
What I'm trying to say is, is it possible that there is a genetic component in some (apparently, increasing numbers), perhaps a weakness of some sort, that prevents the subjects body from responding to or processing vaccine ingredients as effectively as it does in other subjects? That, depending upon the degree of this weakness, exposure to vaccines can result in autism spectrum, learning disabilities, SIDS or even ADHD?
I do know that I have a sensitivity to vaccines that I can document all the way to childhood. A TB test I took in 2004 caused temporary cholestasis and fluid-filled blisters all over my body, and my next-to-last vaccination (Hep B) caused vertigo, loss of skin pigment, systemic eczema and generalized inflammation.

This myth largely got started when a reporter named Dan Olmsted did a poorly researched article on it.
"Olmsted’s anecdotal evidence is cited ad nauseum as evidence that thimerosal causes autism. The case rests on twin assumptions: that the Amish don’t vaccinate, and that they don’t have autism. But Olmsted never visited the cryptically-named Clinic for Special Children in Strasburg, where doctors treat dozens of children who exhibit autistic behavior. It’s not even necessary to visit the clinic. A simple phone call to a staff physician, such as the one I made recently, is enough to debunk “the Amish anomaly”, as Olmsted calls it.
“The idea that the Amish do not vaccinate their children is untrue,” says Dr. Kevin Strauss, MD, a pediatrician at the CSC. “We run a weekly vaccination clinic and it’s very busy.” He says Amish vaccinations rates are lower than the general population’s, but younger Amish are more likely to be vaccinated than older generations.
Strauss also sees plenty of Amish children showing symptoms of autism. “Autism isn’t a diagnosis - it’s a description of behavior. We see autistic behaviors along with seizure disorders or mental retardation or a genetic disorder, where the autism is part of a more complicated clinical spectrum.” Fragile X syndrome and Retts is also common among the clinic’s patients.
Strauss, along with Dr. D. Holmes Morton, MD, authored a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine which described a mysterious seizure disorder that resulted in mental retardation and autistic behavior in nine Amish children. Nope. Antivaxers always have more accusations and insinuations to throw out. For instance, take the great amount of evidence showing that the thimerosal preservative formerly used in routine childhood vaccines is safe. Antivaxers, when they're not totally in denial about the evidence, simply shift their emphasis to other alleged "toxins", again without evidence.
Face it - the only real difference between vaccinated and unvaccinated children is that unvaccinated children are more likely to get potentially dangerous preventable diseases, and to spread them to the rest of the population.
If you have any facts to the contrary, bring 'em on.
It's incumbent on those making the accusations and claims to supply the proof.

This is a reply to # 1,139,840There are actually studies comparing children of mothers addicted to narcotic drugs like Heroin, to children of normal mothers, who are vaccinated.
Apparently, mothers addicted to narcotic drugs have not vaccinated their kids, so authorities thought it would be great to compare those unvaccinated kids to vaccinated kids of normal mothers.
The only problem I have with that study is in the reason why kids were not vaccinated.
Mothers addicted to narcotic drugs neglected kids, have been too poor to vaccinate kids ... and there is the problem ... not only they could not afford vaccines ... but those mothers would rather spend money on Heroin, instead of feeding their kids ...
In that study ... as we could expect ... vaccinated kids happen to have better health then unvaccinated ....
Somehow ... the problem of child neglect seems to be far more important then vaccination ...
There is a question: why would anyone actually choose to compare apples with watermelons?
Other then that poor peace of "science" clearly created to blurry the vaccination debate ... , I am still looking for brave studies on unvaccinated kids in USA ...

Those people could argue that the only reason evidence hasn't been found to prove their claims is that researchers are getting paid off by the supplement companies and alt practitioners. They could say:

Except that this would be a silly argument, just as it is regarding immunization. There's no evidence that either vaccines or herbs cause these problems, therefore there's no justification for spending limited research dollars disproving the claims of obsessive "antis".
If the "antis" really believe in their claims about vaccination, they can put up the dough for good, solid studies. Surely all the chiropractors and other alt practitioners, and the people who fulminate against vaccines have enough money put together to finance this research. Yet it's easier for them to demand that others do the work for them.
The situation is similar to those antivaxers who make deceptive arguments based on federal compensation fund payout for the relative few with vaccine-related injuries. Where are the compensation payments from antivaxers to families whose children have been injured or killed by vaccine-preventable diseases? How come the antivaxers haven't established such a fund, to pay for damage resulting from their deceptions and falsehoods?

I see you didn't take the time to check out the study before firing broadsides wildly in all directions, and missing the target (as usual).
The study is from the New England Journal of Medicine. Here are the positive and negative associations the authors found regarding the tiny amount of mercury preservative young children used to be exposed to:
"Higher prenatal mercury exposure was associated with better performance on one measure of language and poorer performance on one measure of attention and executive functioning. Increasing levels of mercury exposure from birth to 7 months were associated with better performance on one measure of fine motor coordination and on one measure of attention and executive functioning. Increasing mercury exposure from birth to 28 days was associated with poorer performance on one measure of speech articulation and better performance on one measure of fine motor coordination."
Even though the authors found kids with higher prenatal mercury exposure did better on some tests of brain function than other children and not as well on others, these differences were small, and the overall conclusion is that thimerosal exposure makes no real difference one way or the other.
