I have at long last found one solitary reference about cream of tartar in associating to a liver cure.

From an ancient North American herbal book it talks about a condition called a hardened liver which I assume is what we would call a congested liver.

The book says:

Hardness of the liver can be removed by a broth made with dandelion root, the leaves of sorrel and yolk of an egg yolk taken daily for some months while at the same time taking cream of tartar to keep their bodies open (a laxative). Similar course of action is used for ascites (worms) and gallstones.

This is a similar to an old European recipe that uses a broth of dandelion roots only and also with an egg yolk taken each day.

I have always been very impressed with dandelion as a liver healing food and I have tried to grow it as as a salad crop in my garden like the French do. In the 1940's a French scientist called Henri Leclerc showed that dandelion was effective against chronic liver problems related to bile stones. Dandelion root increases the flow of bile considerable (reported to be a factor of 4) and also contains pectin which is responsible for lowering cholesterol by around 18%.

I also noted while clicking away that the mixture of Epsom Salts and Cream of Tartar is very similar to a product called Sulfax; a commercial product purported as aiding elimination for a clearer skin.
