My daughter turned 2 in September. My doctor didn't want to open it because of potential trauma about messing with her privates, but he did say he often does do it with boys because it is easier and the skin just "pops" away. This happens in boys too where the skin on top fuses to the part below. Another reason he doesn't pop it open is because if the skin is raw after broken open, it can essentially fuse together again. That made sense to me. He also mentioned the specialist, but that was a LAST RESORT if the creme didn't work. Again, there would be no rush. It took 2 weeks for me to see that the lesion was in fact getting much thinner. I would put a healthy dose on a Q tip and explain the this medicine will help make her not hurt anymore. Actually I had my husband help on at least 1 application at night to keep her occupied. As I was applying, I'd push ever so gently with the Q tip, but hardly at all. Trust me, give the creme a couple weeks. I don't think 1 week is enough except to see thinning of the membrane. I was totally paranoid about this, but my husband is Ph.D and I trust our pediatrician completely and this was a good first course of treatment that really worked well.

Ooops, one other tip about application - I'd have her lay down as if you were going to change a diaper. You can see much better then because you have to get it on the actual lesion. sorry, I forgot this in my message I just sent.

My daughter is now 2.5 and she still has a little lesion left on the bottom of her opening. My doctor said don't worry about it as this isn't an issue until girls reach puberty, provided it stays closed. He said it is actually quite possible she could be doing some activity, such as riding a bike, that could open the remainder of the lesion. It is my personal opinion that perhaps seeing the specialist would at least ease your mind and give you more information on what options for the future should be if the lesion didn't open on its own. What I did too is to start potty training so we didn't have to have her area covered up with a diaper all the time and the area could "breathe." She's fully trained now. That's what my instinct told me to do. I wish you well.

Yesterday my 2 1/2yr old daughter was diagnosed with a second round of adhesions. I am an RN so I know that if you are not comfortable with treatment of your MD seek additional advice until YOU are comfortable with the outcome. We are starting again with the estrogen cream and I am very hopeful that this will work. I am going to eliminate all bubble baths (including baking soda, oatmeal baths as to all of these can irritate the labia) and switch to sensitive bath soaps such as phisoderm baby. I have done some research as to the next steps after estrogen cream. First I have found you must use generous amts of aquaphor or like ointments for up to 3 years after the adhesions heal. I also have found that once the adhesions heal with use of estrogen cream, you must use an Antibiotic ointment so that it gives the labia a chance to completely heal. If we get to that point, I am going to seek out treatment from a pediatric dermatologist, not a urologist. Vaginal adhesions are medically classified as a dermatological problem. I also will make sure if the adhesion have to be separted surgically, I will have my daughter sedated. This is a very sensitive issue for a little girl and I don't want her to be traumatized by the situation. I don't want her to associate pain and discomfot whenever she has cream applied or myself/MD assessing her peri area. It is bad enough that I have to reason with her for at least 30 minutes each time I have had to apply the cream. I hope these suggestions can help you and others.
