Getting ready for the juice fast...

Getting ready to start a juice fast to lose weight and jump start metabolism.

I am a 37-year old woman and I am getting ready to start a juice fast to lose weight and jump start my metabolism. When I was growing up I was very fit, but since my 20’s I have been struggling with my weight. In 2002, I tipped the scales at 232 pounds. I felt so awful…I quit smoking, started eating healthy and exercised like crazy. I lost 60 pounds and was quite happy and comfortable at 170 and size 10 for a few years. I’ve never been a runner, but I taught myself to run and I was actually running 5 miles a day!

Since fall of 2005, I have gained back quite a bit of weight. I am back up to 215 pounds. I feel sluggish and unmotivated. I have a naturally muscular body, so I can’t possibly get down to a “panty hose” weight of 120 (for my height). I am a perfect size 7 at about 155 pounds, so that is my ultimate goal. But for this summer, I would be quite happy just taking off about 25 pounds by doing this fast. In 7 weeks, I am getting on a plane with my boyfriend for a 3-week vacation in Malaysia! As an incentive, I packed my suitcase already with only size 10 clothing! Even if I don’t make it into a size 10 (45 pounds away), I will be happy just taking off about 25 pounds.

I also have very high cholesterol – I have been at 330 since my first test as a teenager. All of the women on my Mom’s side of the family have cholesterol over 300. My doctor said the majority of the problem is heredity, not lifestyle. He also said if I wanted to have any more candles on my birthday cake, I have no choice but to start medication. So in January, I started taking a statin. I had my cholesterol checked last week and I have dropped 90 points!! But, I don’t want to be on prescription drugs my whole life. My doctor said I will have to be on these drugs my whole life, but I am hopeful that by the end of the year, I can manage it naturally. We’ll see…

One of my biggest obstacles in losing weight is motivation. As it gets hotter and hotter here, I get more and more reluctant to exercise. This is a big, fat excuse of course, because there is a full air-conditioned gym where we live. Still, I have a hard time getting out of bed in the morning to go to the gym.

The biggest obstacle is that I am a private chef. I am a foodie, my boyfriend is a foodie, and all our friends are foodies (hmmm, I just realized we’re all a bit pudgy). Food, wine and entertaining are a HUGE part of our lives. While we do eat healthy for the most past (nearly all organic, fresh, no processed foods), we eat a lot! I’m already nervous about what to do when we go out to dinner with friends – do I just order soup? Should I eat a salad? Should I just sit there like an idiot and just drink water? It's a little easier when we're cooking at home, but going out is going to be tough. I have to try to make good decisions and not just go completely overboard.

I do have a few things in my favor – we already eat a very low-carb diet, so it won’t be too difficult to give up bread, pasta, etc. because we don’t eat much of it anyway. We also grow all our own organic produce, so I have plenty of inspiration! I also have a wonderful juicer that I love to use!

I searched around for different juice fast plans, but couldn’t really find one that didn’t require buying a book. I decided to go it alone, and this is what I came up with…

Early morning: Fruit & veggie juice with greens superfoods powder
Late morning: Protein shake (we use hemp milk and hemp protein powder)
Lunch: Fruit & veggie juice
Late afternoon: Protein shake
Evening: Veggie juice

If anyone has an opinion about this plan, I would love to hear it!! Also, I take a ton of vitamins and herbs. I am wondering if I should cut back on my supplements when I am doing this fast. I think I will really need the protein, and since it isn’t dairy-based, I am hoping it falls within the “veggie” category.

Wish me luck!

Starting weight: 215
