Environmental Stressors play a part in healing

or.. my Christmas...

I've been thinking about this and have not come up with a solid answer but it's more a gut feeling. A little history first...

I was a single mom living in a small house with my daughter and around October last year someone began breaking into my home. The first time was Halloween night, we were never home when it happened but I would come home to find my doors standing wide open or windows smashed and my bedroom destroyed. That is the only thing they seemed interested in was my bedroom. I had a boyfriend who provided some emotional support but the stress of having to come home every night and sleep there was overwhelming, for my daughter also.

So, the first break-in the "thief" took only 1 pair of my underwear and left his socks behind. That time they broke in my back door. The second attempt occured the day before Christmas Eve but they were unable to get in since the back door had been replaced. They smashed and mangled both the front and back doorknobs trying to get in and broke the storm window outside my daughters bedroom but the window was locked - someone cut themselves, there was blood smeared on the window, which I assume is the reason they gave up and did not get in that time.

We packed up our christmas presents and left the house for the weekend to stay with my boyfriend. After the first break in I was sleeping with a knife under pillow, sometimes gripped in my hand, having panic attacks at night where I would wake up suddenly gasping for breath scared to death. I couldn't sleep at all. At this point i was looking for a new place to live and boxing up my things.

Presumably, the thief was a neighbor and was watching all of this, they broke in again in the first week of January. This time they emptied an entire drawer in my bedroom. The drawer had a "kit" of items that my boyfriend had purchased for our enjoyment (if you get what I mean) and some massage oils. They took everything in that drawer. How embarrassing to give a detailed description of these things to some male chauvenistic police officer! ugghh!

Oh, I almost forgot - they took my daughters' pet parakeet also. We had only had the bird for two weeks, she bought it with her Christmas money, it was her first pet. They smashed the window of my daughter's bedroom and let themselves in and the bird was on a nightstand right by the window. The cage was there but the bird was gone. My daughter cried her poor eyes out for 3 days at least.

That night we left and didn't spend another night in that house.

My boyfriend and I moved in together and our house is in a wonderful neighborhood, beautiful clean and peaceful. I am so happy and at peace there, getting wonderful sleep.

So, my point is... during this time that I was under such unbelievable stress I felt that my symptoms were by far at their worst. Now that we have settled into our happy home and my stress level is back to normal I think that has helped a lot in the healing process. We all know that stress affects the whole body, not just the mind or emotional state but it hadn't occured to me at the time what a terrible toll that situation was taking on me. People made me feel like I was being a big baby about it too, like if they didn't take anything of value or scare me while I was home then what's the big deal? Ridiculous!

Anyway, just thinking about that also.
