Self Diagnosis -- Help or Hindrance?

Should Over the Counter Yeast treatments be so available?

In my reading I discovered that 9 times out of 10 when a woman thinks she has a yeast infection, she does not. It is some other type of problem (BV oftentimes) and treating with an over the counter anti-fungal will only make things worse if it's not yeast. In fact, a woman with a healthy immune system should be able to fend off yeast overgrowth.

So, why give us the powerful medicines to buy over the counter, make them seem commonplace... give us perfumed douches and sprays and films and powders to make matters worse, then play us some commercials that tell us if it itches, it's yeast.

I can think of a dozen times at least that I treated myself for a yeast infection but didn't have one. Not to mention - the odor, should menses smell? Should women smell different than other women? Should anyone have any smell at all?

We are so afraid of all this but it seems to me that maybe some smell is normal. We use scented everything from perfume to toilet paper to scented tampons, to cover up completely any discernable body odor. We pump our bodies full of aluminum with our deoderants only to avoid the slightest hint of malodor. Is that really healthy? Is is healthy to try and eradicate all scent from our bodies?

I agree that the heavy fishy odor is not normal (it becomes worse after sex when it mixes with semen, and during menstruation because these occurances make the vaginal Ph more alkaline, which enhances the smell of BV bacteria) Try a vaginal acid jelly (aci-jel, available by prescription) or maybe a mild hydrogen peroxide / water solution douche. Don't jump to take antibiotics or over the counter yeast treatments. You'll be OK!
