Base your designs on the observation of how healthy, natural systems work. Learn how to really harmonize with nature! Emphasize integrated pest management, disaster-proof designs. Improve the quality of water, air, soil, sound and peacefulness on the site. Create useful connections between elements through judicious use of placement, scale, and edge dynamics and 'Patterns of Nature'. This course describes the discipline of landscape design with particular emphasis on healing and regeneration of the land. It is a design system for creating sustainable human environments. The Book Of Nature extends this effort to create environments that are healthful and nurturing for the humans and other species inhabiting the site and that are sustainable in their use of natural resources. It concerns itself with wellness and health in many facets: environmental, economic, social and psychological. This is landscape design with not only ethics, but also a deep understanding of the 'Book of Nature'.
The Soul of the Dwelling with Patricia Michael
We will learn how to go deeper into the unseen world of the site, the soul of the dwelling and the landscape, and the soul of the designer (ourselves). The class will introduce Sufi teachings from Hazrat Inayat Khan to give us personal practices to achieve the attunement necessary to work with the unseen elements of the dwelling, the landscape and ourselves. We will strengthen and sharpen our attunement with the whole, learning specific blessings and how to work with elements, breath and movement.
Using the analogy of our bodies as our first architecture, we will be introduced to the development of architecture from Sufi stories and how spaces have been designed in the Middle East, North Africa and India to support the development of the human spirit. On the last afternoon we will open the subject of obsessions and impressions and how to strengthen the Truth, including special blessings to remove harmful impressions.
