Getting healthier is a great goal to have for the new year. Following a better diet and exercising more often are both important, but these aren't the only ways you can work on your physical and mental wellbeing. Address Your Parasympathetic Nervous System

The vagus nerve is the main nerve of your parasympathetic nervous system, which controls many essential involuntary bodily functions. These include your immune system, digestion, and even your heart rate. If your vagus nerve isn't working right, you could also experience frequent anxiety and emotional troubles. 

Activating or stimulating this nerve can help to correct imbalances and disorders to restore your health. Deep breathing is one simple way to stimulate your vagus nerve. If you have frequent discomfort from one or more health issues, you might want to consider a chiropractic adjustment to address this crucial nerve. 

Try the Emotional Freedom Technique

The emotional freedom technique (EFT) uses gentle tapping motions to specific meridian points to help lessen emotional and physical discomfort from things like stress, anxiety, pain, and trauma. It's easy to do. You simply tap on points on your head, torso, and hand while thinking about the problem that is troubling you. As you tap, make statements about the problem, followed by a statement of self-love and acceptance. You can do EFT anywhere, at any time, and repeat until you feel better. 

Get Acupuncture or Acupressure

Acupuncture and acupressure are both part of Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) that believes improving and balancing the body's life force, or Qi, can correct many health concerns. Acupuncture involves having a licensed practitioner insert thin needles into specific points of your body. These are carefully chosen to target the meridians that need unblocking to address your exact illness or emotional needs. 

Acupressure is a noninvasive alternative. Instead of needles, your practitioner applies pressure to certain points using their fingers or tool. Acupressure is typically less expensive than acupuncture. Both of these methods are effective at treating a number of physical and emotional symptoms. 

Explore Halotherapy

Another unique health practice worth looking into is halotherapy. This simply means that you breathe in very small particles of salt to treat breathing and lung problems. It's also recommended for allergies and skin complaints. Himalayan salt is often used for halotherapy. 

Halotherapy is usually done in a spa-like setting. There are passive and active forms of halotherapy. For passive salt therapy, you may sit in a room lined with salt blocks that also has crushed salt on the floor. An active halotherapy room uses a halogenerator. This machine breaks salt down into tiny particles and pumps it into the air so you breathe it in. 

Filter Your Drinking Water

A super simple way that you can improve your health is by filtering your drinking water. Tap water is often full of chemicals and additives that are meant to clean and treat the water to make it better quality.

However, these additions sometimes have side effects that you may wish to avoid. It's also possible that your tap water is contaminated with pollutants. Every municipality is responsible for treating water to make it safe for consumption. Yearly testing checks for problems and you can get a copy of the report online or by request. Still, the best way to gain control of your drinking water's quality is by using a countertop filtration system to make sure it's as pure as possible.
