Why You Should Start Swimming for Fitness

Instead of dreading your fitness routine, why not concentrate on exercises you enjoy? If you loved swimming as a kid, here are several reasons you should start swimming again for fitness.

When you think back on your childhood, some of the best memories center around swimming. Whether it was in a backyard pool, up at the lake or in the ocean, swimming was fun. Now that you're an adult, exercise often feels like a chore. Instead of dreading your fitness routine, why not concentrate on exercises you enjoy? If you loved swimming as a kid, here are several reasons you should start swimming again for fitness.

Provides Full Body Workout

If you're looking for a no-nonsense workout that benefits every part of your body, there's nothing better than swimming. A good swim works your arms, legs and torso. It can also help you reach your weight loss goals quickly, or tone your muscles if you're already at the right weight. Swimming is a form of aerobic exercise and is a powerful workout for your heart. This reduces your risk of heart disease, decreases blood pressure and helps lower your cholesterol.

Saves You Money

Installing a pool in your backyard keeps you healthy and saves you money at the same time. When you look at an affordable in ground pool cost compared with a gym membership, plus the preparations and gas to get there, a pool saves you more in the long run. With a pool in your backyard, all you need to do is jump in. You can exercise any time of the day or night, and as many times as you want. Plus, you have all the privacy you desire, unlike a gym or club.

Makes You Feel Happier

Have you ever noticed you're happier when you're swimming? Swimming is incredibly freeing and it also feels like you're on vacation. Plus, a vigorous swim makes you tired (in a good way), improving your sleep. Taking in the crystal clear water and sparkling ripples of a pool have a way of making the day's trouble melt away. When you have a pool, you're also more likely to socialize with family and friends and that's an automatic mood-booster.

Soothes Muscles and Joints

The beauty of swimming is that it's a complete workout, but at the same time, it's low-impact. If you have arthritis or have experienced an injury, swimming is the perfect exercise to lessen your pain and speed up your recovery. When the water is warm on balmy evenings, it's soothing to sore joints and muscles. When you're limited on what exercises you're able to do, whether permanently or temporarily, swimming is the best one to choose.

Involves Family and Friends

Another reason to pick up swimming again is that you can enjoy it with friends or the entire family. If you have children, they'll be more than happy to engage in pool games. Just playing with the kids for an hour or two in the pool will burn a ton of calories. You'll also be encouraging family members to stay fit along with you. Plus, teaching your kids to swim is a valuable skill they should have from an early age. If you own a pool, inviting friends over is a great way to get extra exercise.

Increases Mental Health

Swimming for fitness improves your mental health in a variety of ways. As soon as you climb into the pool, your stress level begins to go down. Swimming causes you to release endorphins which are the feel-good chemicals produced in your pituitary gland. Swimming has also been proven to reduce levels of depression and anxiety. For those that struggle with self-esteem, having their own pool is a great way to increase their confidence in their own space.

If your exercise routine has lost its appeal, make sure you're performing an activity you honestly enjoy. Swimming is loved by many and is easy to do every day when you have a pool. Swimming gives you a complete body workout and saves you money, increases your happiness and lets you stay involved with family and friends.
