Fasting Day 1

Day 1 of water only fast morphs into my first dry fast. Details included.

Day 1 of fasting is down and it seems that I’ve started my water-only fast out as a dry fast. This is the first time I have ever dry fasted. I started out with the intent to only drink as much water as my body called for, but I never got thirsty during the period of time that I was awake. I laid down to take a nap at noon and ended up sleeping until 2:00am! My body must have needed the 14 hours of rest. My boyfriend woke me up a couple of times, once when he got home at 3:30pm and right before he went to bed at 8:30pm. I usually greet him at the door and I think he was just worried at why I was sleeping so much. I slept so hard both times that I could hardly crack one eye to see my way to the bathroom when I got up. I was also very grumpy at having been woken and I’m pretty sure I snapped at him for doing so, but it was like my body rebelled at being disturbed. Both times I went right back to bed after using the bathroom. I’ll apologize for being grumpy in the morning!

Now I will comment on different aspects that I am keeping an eye on during the fast.

HUNGER & THIRST: They are both non-existent at the moment. I have done other short fasts leading up to this one (3 days, 2 days, and 1 day) and I'm usually really hungry by the end of the first day. As I head into my second day, I feel completely devoid of any type of hunger pangs or thirst. I’m usually fantasizing about food by this point, but as of yet – I’m still not interested. I have read that dry fasting has this effect upon a faster and it is definitely true in my case.

ENERGY LEVEL: I needed a nap at noon which was 12 hours into my fast, but upon waking up 14 hours later, I have tons of energy. I feel like I want to go outside and walk or something, but it is in the middle of the night and probably best that I stay in.

DETOX SYMPTOMS: I have no headache which is strange compared to my other fasts. I have to constantly stay on top of dry skin issues. I haven’t used any lip balm, lotions, or oils since starting the fast, so I don’t know if it is due to that or if it is due to no water intake, but my lips are very dry and already cracking. My skin seems to be doing alright.

TONGUE & BREATH: I know this is part of detox symptoms, but I felt it needed a section to itself as I find it to play an interesting part during fasting. My tongue is still pink, but I definitely already have a sour/bitter taste in my mouth. I can imagine the odor would be offensive to someone. This has happened much quicker than it did in my previous short water fasts.

URINE COLOR: I am including this due to the dry fasting aspect. I didn’t pay attention to the color of my urine earlier as I could barely even see to make my way to the bathroom, but when I did wake up it was really dark. An orangey color (which really threw me off) in the amount of 200mL. I know that I am extremely toxic, so I am sure it has something to do with that, but I am not going to push my luck with the dry fast and I will be ending it at the 36 hour mark and transitioning into my water fast.

AILMENT UPDATES: As expected, everything is the same as it was in the beginning. I am excited to see changes when they do occur.

VITAL SIGNS: I had planned on taking my blood pressure, but we do not have an automatic cuff. I have a manual cuff and stethoscope, so I was hoping to see if my boyfriend knew how to get an accurate reading, but as you know – I slept. The last time I took my blood pressure (which was a few months ago) it ran around 115/68. It is usually stable around that area without much change, so I will use that as a marker for when I do attain an automatic cuff. Upon awaking my pulse was 84, temperature was 97.7F, respirations (although hard not to alter your breathing when you are counting yourself) was 20. I also checked my skin turgor and it is still elastic with no tenting which is good when considering dehydration.

WEIGHT: I am 5’5 tall and started my fast at 250.2 lbs. 26 hours into my fast I weighed 247.6. That is a total loss of 2.6 lbs for my first day.
