There's no backing, so the "quilt" is translucent. The 2nd photo shows the "quilt" up in my living room window; you can see the sunlight through it and the greenery of the plants in the front yard. It was fun to do, I love to hand embroider, it's very relaxing. I was up ALL NIGHT and finished just as the sun was coming up; I said to myself, "gee, I wonder what time it is?" It was 7 AM! Hint: if you want to try this yourself--I used regular scotch tape on the back of the quilt to hold the pieces of plastic together as they were sewn with embroidery thread, then removed most of the tape after the whole thing was completed. Because the plastic is, well, plastic, it is easy to tear and on some places, particularly around the thin edges, the plastic ripped as I was pulling the thread through. No problem! I just put a little piece of scotch tape over the rip on the back and sewed right through it, leaving the tape on, then reinforced that area with glue on the back. Regular white glue won't work, it doesn't adhere well to plastic, so I used a bit of "Liquid Fusion", a clear urethane glue that dries clear and is waterproof; the ends of the thread on the back were also glued down using the urethane glue. Here is another art piece made out of "junk" plastic-- Plastic Wreath: http://curezone.com/blogs/fm.asp?i=1971675#i "Eco Art by mayah" utilizes reused materials and earth friendlier art supplies.
