TOMMY & Transformations Of My Mythological Youth
The writing of an auto-biographical account of rock-opera proportions.
Date: 11/14/2013 7:46:10 PM ( 11 y ) ... viewed 2496 times In the 80's I wrote a semi-biographical account that I titled T.O.M.M.Y - Transformations of My Mythological Youth" that included a center stage reference to the WHO's Rock Opera TOMMY. I am still interested in possibly publishing (probably requires rewriting) this paper. Just today I realized that I need to read Pete Townsend's biography and then revisit TOMMY in light of that. More on this as I can get to it.
"Townshend swiftly absorbed all of Baba's writings that he could find; by April 1968, he announced himself Baba's disciple. At about this time, Townshend, who had been searching the past two years for a basis for a rock opera, created a story inspired by the teachings of Baba and other writings and expressing the enlightenment he believed that he had received from them, which ultimately became Tommy. Tommy did more than revitalise The Who's career (which was moderately successful at this point but had reached a plateau); it also marked a renewal of Townshend's songwriting and his spiritual studies infused most of his work from Tommy forward, including the unfinished Who project Lifehouse. The Who song "Baba O'Riley", written for Lifehouse and eventually appearing on the album Who's
Next, was named for Meher Baba and minimalist composer Terry Riley. His newfound passion was not shared by his bandmates, whose attitude was tolerant, but who were unwilling to become the spokesmen for a particular religion."[1]

Just posted the next paragraph (to Alan) at The Who.com site in reply to Alan's comment about the recent release of the deluxe edition of "Sensation - The Story of The Who's Tommy" (I just got to the Who's site late Thursday night on the 14th yet this morning I had the Who's "I'm a sensation" playing in my head before knowing anything at all about this forthcoming release! ! Am I tuned in or what! ; - )

I agree about the gift of Tommy! There is something about Tommy that distinguishes it most uniquely and in ways that I have yet to fully articulate and yet which became a most remarkable mutative part of my life! I started writing a paper on this in the 80's and I continually get additional insights into the archetypal depths in Tommy (that as far as I know have never been made "accessible" before). I am one most grateful "mutation" who actually gained the courage to literally smash my own mirror/s and do whatever it took to free myself from the deafening, dumbing-down and blinding bondage of social conditioning that I now know begins at birth when we enter this world.

TOMMY in light of Human Design (most especially the Human Design of Pete Townshend) is one of the twelve perspectives that I would include in my TOMMY biography. However, I don't know that life is actually bringing anything to me on this greater writing idea that I can then respond to other than my own thought of TOMMY upon reading "Sensation - is true understanding" as the heading for the above quoted Omraam message. Wish I had a master Human Design teacher whom I could easily confer with about this!
I identify with writing, now more so than ever before, and I "believe" in journaling (even recommend it to others)! I especially subscribe to "writing down the soul". My theme of "TOMMY & Transformations Of My Mythological Youth" is something that lives in me. In other words I am devoted to the life-long process of personal transformation that I see is largely about resolving the conflicts that came with the conditioning process throughout childhood. It is incumbent upon me to write T.O.M.M.Y. before advocating that others write their archetypal personal mythology. Yet once again I do not see that the universe is asking me to do this. It may just be a personal and private biography and that just may be all that it is meant to be!

If you are the least bit familiar with any of my many other references to "Transformations" then you may already know of my deep contemplations on the Gene Keys. This work is essentially called "The Golden Path" and I am in the process of (most probably) recommitting to it in a more dedicated (and official) way. It appears to be primarily a matter of "money" and I expect that to change as I move out of my personal "7" year to a more abundant "8" year soon! I wish to do this as it is a required prerequisite for entering the Gene Keys Ambassador Program.
I'm inspired to post this entry upon reading my notes for the 33rd Gene Key how Pete has both his Pluto activations here - corresponding to Throat Gate 33:
Gate 33: Retreat - The Gate Of Privacy -
- Active withdrawal and the transformation of a weak position into a strength -
Quarter: Civilization, Theme: Purpose fulfilled through Form.
Gate 33 marks the end of a cycle, and built into all endings is a moment of silence for considering every aspect of the experience. This is where your need to be alone comes from. Retreat for you arises in that moment of uncertainty between the completed experience and a new one, a pause that allows you to reflect on what to take forward while you renew your strength. It is in the quiet moments of contemplation that the most valuable lessons, stored in the depths of Collective memory (Gate 13), will come to the surface. In Gate 33 your need for privacy is joined by the Collective's voice of "I remember." It is also your nature to share the lessons of experience and reveal its truths. The experience can be one of your own, or another's, or even that of a group of people; the process is the same. When the time is ripe, you will be asked to share your wisdom which then becomes part of the greater community and humanity's evolving consciousness. Like the Prodigal, you mature over your lifetime, and your realm of influence expands as you move through each cycle of experience. Without Gate 13 you may not have a sense of the right timing for sharing your lessons.
And according to his BodyGraph[2] he doesn't have Gate 13 activated.
However the greater inspiration that I have in all of this is regarding the Siddhi[3] frequency for the 33rd Gene Key: Revelation. The fact that Pete has this Gene Key activated by both his Pluto activations impresses me with the nature of Pluto (which includes powerlessness and transformation which were clearly expressed in TOMMY, as well as a rebirth that "requires the descent into the underworld, into one's darkness, most forbidden places, our taboos"[4]) and that this activation is located in his Throat Center which I am amazed is not defined! In light of all the above I am utterly convinced that the story known as TOMMY is a creative expression of Pete's that very much includes his own Human Design and that TOMMY points to the higher frequency ("vibration" as well as "highest high" as these term/phrases are used in TOMMY) inherent in his own Gene Keys!
I have to add that Pluto in an undefined center "... tells of the theme where you experience losing the ground beneath your feet, where you have an unexpected tour into your deepest fears."[2] TOMMY may be a "rock opera" that people can have considerable generally enjoyable experiences of however it has an amazing depth that may very well be beyond the capacity of the average "rocker" to fully appreciate! I count myself as an exception to this as TOMMY had truly sparked my quest for "the truth of self" knowing that the "journey" had to go through hell for the "cure" to be effective.
Lastly (for now) his Design (unconscious) Pluto activation at Line 2 raises a question that could be the opening of a new interview with Pete:
Line 2 - Surrender -
Exalted: The recognition that surrender to superior forces can be an opportunity to expand one's own strengths and eventually triumph. Embracing powerful forces in order to lay the foundation for future success.
Detriment: Unlike the reasoned and calculated surrender above, the deeper and personal surrender. The feeling that one's original position was a delusion and the impressionability that makes might right. A public embrace of powerful forces, and a private resentment of their power.[5]

I thought of Tommy (and music in general) upon reading the last phrase: "tonal music ... and rhythm — which ... can also be used as a medium of healing." Nowadays we have schools devoted to music therapy however this field was not as well known when Tommy was released.
