Salk institute Scientist Says GMO's needs to be Labeled

I attended a very important GMO Panel October 23, Tuesday, at UCSD. The highlight was a powerful interaction between a top Biotech Scientist, a teacher at UCSD, and a Salk Institute Scientist. The Salk institute scientist, has been working on GMO's for more than 30 years.
He agreed with the YES on 37 position that GMOs are basically untested, and people are using them at their own risk.
The idea that GMOs are tested, was refuted by Jeffrey M. Smith, who has authored the best selling books, "Seeds of Deception," and most recently,
The growing in popular DVD,' Genetic Roulette."
Through the generosity of a host of companies in the health, Fair Trade, and organic industry, the DVD "Genetic Roulette" is available free to be watched online until November 6.
The information, by health investigator Smith brings to question if GMOs can be implicated in the increase of disease that has rising concurrently with the introduction of GMOs into our food supply 18 years ago.
The Right to Know- Yes on 37 argument is that consumers have a Right to Know.
The No on 37 argument is that the proposition as written would release lawyers who would sue companies who do not follow the new Law. This is the argument that many have "bought: into, including news reporters from the local Channel Six news.
The Lawyer argument is questionable. According to the Yes Position, Lawyers have nothing to gain from attempting to sue. The Proposition was carefully written to ensure passage. There is nothing for a lawyer to gain. If a company were taken to court, and were proved to be lying to the public on purpose--in other words--saying they were non gmo when in fact--they had GMOs--they could be fined a small amount of money.
Companies that have GMOs in in their process food, but did not know it, would not be fined.
Companies, by the law, would be given 14 months to come up with a simple label additional to say that their product has GMOs. Most companies regularly change their labels any way, the panelists said.
In Europe, where foods were labeled, there was no additional cost.
The concern of many of the panelists had to do with the basic health claim that GMOs are safe.
A number of the panelists were very concerned. Dr. Maarteen Chrispeels, a lead Biotech advocate who works for UCSD, made the assessment that people were acting paranoid about the need for labeling.
JImbo, the owner of Jimbo's Naturally, said he was paranoid. He said that eating organic food had been his cause for many years; however, the helping to give his customers the choice of whether they wanted to choose GMO foods or non GMO foods, was now his passion.
He was in the camp of panelists who had big concerns about the dangers of GMO foods.
