We have all done it at some point. We have consumed a certain food merely because we are feeling down or bored. Comfort eating is done out of habit, usually with no regard for nutrition or health benefits. It is an emotional response to a situation that is carried out through eating. In a bad situation, our response is to eat something that we associate with positive thoughts. Once you switch to a raw food diet, you can no longer eat many of the comfort foods you once loved.

Why We Eat For Comfort

Before going on a raw food diet, comfort eating was easy. The foods that we crave are usually those that are easily accessible. Salty and sweet junk food such as chips and cookies and cakes are not actual food, but are associated with making us temporarily feel better when we are feeling low. The unfortunate side effect of consuming those foods is that many of the chemicals found in processed foods are designed to make you want more. They get into your blood stream and cause the body to crave the food even more.

Comfort Eating and Going Raw

When you start eating a raw foods diet, you will need to overcome the comfort eating and cravings that go along with it. This is probably the most difficult part about going raw. It can be easy to stray off your new diet and resort back to processed foods that are familiar. Your body will crave a certain food and your taste buds will want to taste it again.

Getting Over the Comfort Foods

To overcome the moments when you crave comfort foods, you can trick your brain into being satisfied by another raw treat. There are many raw desserts that can be made without any added sugar, gluten or dairy. Dishes like fruit bars, ice creams, chocolate cookies and fudge can all be made with a raw twist. They may not be exactly like the sweet dessert you used to eat but it should help satisfy the craving. If you crave salty and usually reach for potato chips, you can make raw flax chips, or even raw nachos (rawchos).

Comfort eating is something that is done out of habit. When we are unhappy, we tend to reach for foods that we feel will make our mouths happy, in turn making us happy. When going raw, many of our beloved comfort foods become off limits. Luckily, there are many raw desserts and snacks that are not only good for you, but still taste good to help you get over the comfort eating cravings.
