Cara Cadwallader, of the Prosperity Hive, "East Village's Sweet Spot for Whole Being Sustainability"was a highlight for me at the Bright Green Conference Reception held at the University of San Diego at the end of Day One of this very profound not to be missed yearly conference. Other highlights Day One, included a Mayor's Forum between San Diego Mayor Candidates Bob Filner (D), and Nathan Fletcher (R). Dr. Stephen Greenwald, another San Diego Mayor Candidate was also present, but did not speak.

Carolyn Chase, the founder of the San Diego EarthFair, Co-founder of the San Diego Day shined as M.C of the Mayor's Forum. Both candidates were impressive. Nathan Fletcher showed himself as an independent Republican candidate, and Bob Filner also impressed me with his enviromental stands. Filter's bio note included spending a few months in jail in the 60's as part of the Free Riders during the Martin Luther King era. I had a sense that Filner would make a great mayor. Nathan Fletcher also spoke strongly, and showed himself a great candidate. Filner has served in Washington. Fletcher in Sacramento as an assemblyman.
I had a chance to ask Bob Filner about his support of S-510, the Food Safety Modernization Act that was one of the main pieces of legislation that I worked against last year. He did not seem to recall the bill. When I jogged his memory by saying it increased FDA authority of food safety, he seemed to matter of factly say that he had voted for the Bill. I did not sense that too many legislators really grasped the significance of the bill that has given the FDA the power to go after local organic farmers. Few of them read the bill that passes as a rider on the Cash for Clunkers Harry Reid Bill.

I had a sweet feeling for Bob Filner, and a lot of compassion. I think he could make a good mayor of San Diego. I did not have a sense that he grasped the importance of S-510, The Food Safety Modernization Act, that has given the FDA unbridled powers to harm local organic farmers as they please and harass private Buying Clubs such as Rawesome in Venice and Grass Fed on the Hill in Washington D.C. All this overreaching has inspired the new national Farm Food Freedom Coalition that will be tested the FDA on November 1. In L.A. a couple weeks ago, I attended Superior Court as the Rawesome Three were before the judge. A number of the people in court that day are in the film Farmageddon. All this overreaching, in my opinion, comes from the mind of Michael R. Taylor, our Food Czar, who is behind all that.. Michael R. Taylor wants to bring the FDA into alignment with the international Codex Alimentarius Commission. All this stuff about Food Safety is basically about Trade and the emerging competition from local organic farmers and these buying clubs that do not pay taxes. The USDA has a $7 million budget to manage a 26 Billion a year organic industry that is growing every year. The FDA current position is that people do not have a right to choose the food that feel they deserve. I do not believe it has too much to do with Real Food Safety. All this is now being tested in the courts.
ARUNDO DONAX CAN BE MULCHED AND IS A POTENTIAL SOURCE OF BIOMASS FOR FUELS
The Miramar Greenery and the San Diego Fire Bureau were under the impression that Arundo Donax, the plant in my pot, could not be mulched. We now have successfully mulched it. There are a number of large stands of it bordering the Arosa Canyon, where I live. I am currently in a research project with the help of sponsors to show the many uses of this valuable plant that many consider a weed from hell. One of the fastest growing plants on earth, Arundo Donax is currently being researched as a tremendous source of Biofuels by one company in Georgia. I sense, if managed properly, it could be a source of great economic fortune for San DIego.
