A TERRIBLE TRAGEDY!
http://forums.sustainablecountry.com/forums/showthread.php?5324-A-Terrible-Tragedy!

Anyone else thinking more than sad, this is a hostile takeover to remove open pollinated seed stock from public distribution? Mars is a food corporate giant and whom owns and controls them? Well a quick little internet research shows Masterfoods and Masterfoods works hand in hand with Berkshire Hathaway whom 80% of their stock is bequeathed to the Gates Foundation (Bill and Melinda Gates) and they in turn are funding and working with Monsanto and are vested in their GMO distribution in world food development in the third world and in the safekeeping of our worlds open pollinated seed stock in the seed depository in Svallbaard Norway.

Happy Texan, I have news for you, the Seed Savers Exchange was also taken over and the seeds stock placed in depository overseen by Monsanto vaulted on a remote island in northern Svalbaard , Norway . Good luck anyone seeing their heirloom seed deposits placed with them, ever again in a freely distributed open pollinated form. Though they are still operating, it is NOT under the premise it was originally founded from , here I post a link to a transcript of founder Kent Whealy's speech:

Around Northern New Mexico

Journal and Wire Reports
Seeds of Change Farm To Be Sold
Mars Inc. plans to sell the Seeds of Change research farm in El Guique as it transfers the operation to Southern California.
The corporation known for candy bars recently announced plans to relocate both the Seeds of Change management team and its research farm from northern New Mexico.
A Seeds of Change spokeswoman confirmed to the Journal via e-mail Thursday that the move includes the sale of the research farm, which is in El Guique on 6 acres of land along the Rio Grande.
"Part of this decision includes selling the farm, although it has not yet been listed for sale," Alice Nathanson wrote.
Seeds of Change, which cultivates and disseminates organic vegetable, herb, flower and cover crop seeds, started in New Mexico more than 20 years ago. Mars bought the company in the 1990s.
The Seeds of Change website had previously described the farm as being on "ancient agricultural land originally cultivated by the Tewa people (that) has been farmed continually for thousands of years."
Nathanson told the Journal earlier this month that the move from New Mexico was part of a "strategic shift" to be closer to the Mars food office in Rancho Dominguez, Calif.
"This is part of a long-term growth strategy," she said.
Seeds of Change employs fewer than two dozen people in New Mexico, according to Nathanson, and she said "many" were offered the chance to move with the company.

Everybody getting the picture now? Be careful whom you support with your consumer dollar!

I can vouch that the Seed and Plant Sanctuary of Canada has never sold out , it is grass roots and operated by Dan Jason in Salt Spring Island , hense he sells seed also under the name Salt Spring Seeds. We either support those few grass roots organizations, and exchange ourselves or lose a freedom to grow our own when there are no seed networks left.

The last bastions of open pollinated seed sources are shrinking to be as small as ourselves, often aging individuals who are trying to preserve stock , hence I am joining the Canadian Seed and Plant Sanctuary because I am sure ever single little grower helps if they will diligently preserve some stock. I will do some small part, what I can to be part of a solution.

THE NEED FOR SEED SANCTUARIES

Why do we need Seed Sanctuaries?

Many things these days point to the looming importance of local food security. Soon we may no longer be able to take food for granted because of economic breakdown, environmental destruction and climate change.
The two most important keys to food security are local production and crop diversity. In these challenging times, we need to work together to keep the earth our Garden.
Our Sanctuary champions the idea that seeds should stay in the public domain. There are millions of ardent gardeners and farmers across Canada. From growing food, it is a small step to making educated choices about the best seeds to keep alive. Who better to shape agriculture than some of the farmers and gardeners who devote themselves to the land?

The Seed Sanctuary is changing the culture of food in Canada by promoting grass roots preservation of our seed heritage. We can work together so that growing food is less about making money and more about making health. A sustainable agriculture works with nature’s fertility and abundance. We can honour the carrying capacity of both city and country spaces by embracing safe and sustainable ways of feeding ourselves.

INTRO

I was alerted early yesterday morning via
Keep The Beet to the sale of the Seeds of Change
Research Farm in the summer of 2010.
This led me to these other activities I am
still looking into.
