SHOW ME THE MOVEMENT!”
“MAKE ME DO IT!”
–PRESIDENT OBAMA SAID

President Obama was at a dinner a number of years back.
He was asked about his support for the Sustainability movement
that includes Cultivating Food Justice. He and his wife were
sympathetic but he said that the movement itself would would have to
Grow Strong and show its strength before before he
could take action. He said, ‘Make Me Do It!!
Then he turned to his wife, First Lady
Michelle Obama and said, Baby! It’s Your Project!”

WATCH THE VIDEO OF MICHAEL POLLEN
TELLING THE STORY HERE
http://plantyourdream.net/?p=1686

April 15, 2010, a couple years later,
Michelle Obama Came to the City Heights,
a city that was singled out to be one of 10 cities receiving 10 million dollars
because of improvements it had already shown that
gave the California Endowment a sense that their money
would be well spent investing here.

First Lady Michelle Obama visited the New Roots IRC Community Garden to launch her
Let’s Move!” Project, a national initiative that includes
an support for exercise, nutrition and gardening.

WHERE ARE WE NOW?
ARE WE READY TO MAKE PRESIDENT OBAMA DO IT?

So where are we now?

At theFourth Annual Cultivating Food Justice Conference,
we get a read out of the state of the movement
from City Heights, San Diego, one of the nation’s
top sustainability movement cities.

IN THIS DISCUSSION, PLEASE EXPRESS YOUR THOUGHTS,
FEELINGS, AND DREAMS FOR CULTIVATING FOOD JUSTICE
IN SAN DIEGO AND EVERYWHERE!!!

Thank you,

Leslie Goldman

All living creatures MUST EAT in order to be alive! In this time when life in the planet is fragile; millions are food insecure, the climate is changing, nuclear proliferation, rising world population ... we all need to take action! The fisrt thing should be to ensure that everyone eats good food, I would call it "The good food revolution". I co-founded Grow Strong http://www.growstrong.org/
as one of my action items. What are you doing?

Food Justice, to me, represents the equal and fair access to healthy, organic food for ALL! One major issue I recognize is that organic, locally-grown food is, oft times, mistakenly believed to be "Expensive." Unfortunately, what most of ...us don't realize is that the "inexpensive" fruits & veggies that we buy at most conventional, grocery stores are extremely costly to the health of both our own human bodies as well as to the health of our planet.
A few solutions are to create more health food stores in neighborhoods that do not have such existing markets - these regions are sometimes referred to as "food deserts." Other solutions include creating more local, farmer's markets (esp. in these so-called deserts) and GROWING FOOD in our backyards, homes, schools, neighborhoods, etc. WE NEED GARDENS ON EVERY OTHER BLOCK!
Personally, my goal is to cultivate Food Justice here in East Village and downtown San Diego where, as of yet, there is not one health food store and there is only one community garden (Seeds at City College) and one Farmer's Market, which doesn't even really sell food.
Join us this weekend in City Heights for the annual Cultivating Food Justice event. Keep the Beet will be there! & I'll be there, too - holding space each morning for movement as well as offering a workshop on regional sustainability on Sunday. ♥

Oh, yes and I forgot to add a link (thanks, Enchanted Gardener!)
Since the last year's CFJC, this is what I have co-founded in an attempt at offering solutions to the question of how we, as a people and a region, are going to endure in these times to come. Check it out: http://www.prosperity-hive.com

And see you all this weekend!

IT WOULD BE GREAT TO GET THESE UP ON HUFFINGTON POST

i tried posting it but it's too long, here it is...

in '84 when i first set foot in the santa monica food coop, the sign
above read "food for people, not for profit", to me, that pretty-much
sums it up. people don't benefit from polluted, over-priced,
mis-labeled, nutrient-depleted, poisoned food; corporations do, and as
long as we let monsanto, tyson et all run our food policy through
their unbounded "campaign contributions" and their washington
lobbyists we're fighting an uphill battle!
the beauty of it is, that it is Our battle, the battle for survival of
our species, in a planet already compromised by unmitigated greed and
poor judgment. a battle where in the face of a nuclear-reactor
meltdown, we hear our leaders proclaim their faith in $39Billion worth
of nuclear-based energy tax breaks for the industry. after the "too
big to fail" institutions get bailed-out with trillion$ of our money,
most states and cities are left plundering basic services from the
people to get back on a balanced budget.
we, the people, are left to protect ourselves and our interests,
because it doesn't take a brain surgeon to realize that government is
more concerned -as every other institution is-with its own survival,
than it is with ours.
so, wake-up, and smell the coffee, educate yourself, that's
what the sdfoodjustice conference is all about, the time for
self-reliance is here, that's how change has come on this planet since
millenia, and that's how it's gonna happen now!

INTRO

Speak Up Now on Cultivating Food Justice!
What do the those at our Cultivating Food Justice Event need to hear from you?
What is your message that all in the White House and in San Diego government need to hear about Cultivating Food Justice?

HERE IS A LONGER INTRO FOMR THE SPEAK OUT

YOU ARE INVITED TO THE
CULTIVATING FOOD JUSTICE SPEAK OUT
9:00 am-10:00 am

in City Heights.

The gymnasium is located at

4302 Landis Street

Come Speak out on Cultivating Food Justice!
What is your message for our First Lady to deliver
to the President?

April 15, 2010, a few days before the 2011 Cultivating Food Justice
Event at SDSU, Michelle Obama, our First Lady, came to the New Roots
Community Farm to launch her national campaign called "Let's Move!"
She said that all eyes of the nation were on this plot of land. Numbers
of the farmers who had plots inside the farm were left out of gate.
They had messages to speak. One year later, we return to City Heights
for our 2011 Cultivating Food Justice Event. We begin with a Speak Out
on Cultivating Food Justice. What are the Messages we would tell
from inside the gate now? What Messages does Washington and
City Government here in San Diego need to know about Cultivating
Food Justice? Michelle Obama said "Let's Move!" I say that the movement
can be called an Organic Uprising! Standing Up
for Nature's Original Technology seems a profound priority now.

That is my Take. What is Yours?
A number of others will Speak Out at the Plenary. We want you to
Speak Out Too! This event will be recorded and sent to Washington
and be, as seeds, broadcast.

BACK BOARDS FROM THE PRESS TENT
FROM THE MICHELLE OBAMA VISIT
APRIL 15

These are the back boards that were a gift from the California Endowment,
the group that put on the Michelle Obama event in 2010. They were a gift
to the Cultivating Food Justice Event. They will be brought to our
2011 Cultivating Food Justice Event and we will speak in front of them
just as Michelle Obama and other local dignitaries spoke in front of them
in 2010. What will you Speak Out on Cultivating Food Justice?

SPEAK OUT ISSUES?

HERE ARE SOME.
