SHOW ME THE MOVEMENT 2011 UPDATE
THIS REPORT IS ADDRESSED TO
THE PRESIDENT
It is addressed to President Barack Obama,
who a number of years ago said:
"Show me the movement!
Make Me Do It!"
He was saying, if we as a people wanted
him to support our Sustainability movement,
including Cultivating Food Justice, we had to show
him our progress.
This is a 2011 progress report.
You will learn about our national Food Emergency here.
You will see and get the feel for the power of one local movement
as we visit the Fourth Annual 2011 Cultivating Food Justice Event
from City Heights, April 9-10.
You will Find Action Steps that can be taken now.
INTRO
THIS IS A REPORT FOR ALL WHO HAVE EYES TO SEE
AND EARS TO HEAR
We are in a national food emergency. The indication are everywhere,
and the solutions are also happening.
On January 27, 2011, our USDA, taking orders from industry dictating
policy from the White House, gave free reign to allow Genetically Engineered alfalfa seeds to be grown, disregarding health reports on the desk of our
Sec of Ag saying that we were in a state of emergency and this could likely be traced to Roundup Ready, glyphosate, the main herbicide used in GE alfalfa growing. Glyphosate Dr. Don M. Huber said, may contain a pathogen harmful to animal, human, and plant health. Our basic policy of agriculture now is profit per acre over nutrition per acre. Our basic issue of Food Safety, is not Real Food Safety, but making food safe for international trade and corporate interests.
Times they are a Shifting. Many, many of us will gather April 9-10, 2011 in City Heights Venues to not only Speak Out the many problems we see with Food Justice, but be show we can each be the solutiions for Cultivating Food Justice. Please Join us for two days of Free events that will reshape
our local economy.
THE EMERGING PARADIGM
The emerging paradigm is that we have to grow some of our own food, and know the farmers personally growing the rest of our food.
REGAINING FOOD JUSTICE
One of the simplest ways to regain food justice is to cultivate it. Rather than lawns and concrete spaces, we need to see food growing through our
entire bio region from the border to the edges of our county and beyond.
President Obama and his wife
Michelle expressed that they were sympathetic to our sustainability
movement, but he said his hands were tied unless we showed him the movement. We are here to show him the movement.
The movement toward Cultivating Food Justice is everywhere visible
to those who walk the streets within walking distance of its Mid City Gym,
City Heights, the site for an emerging Urban Village.
The President said, "Show me the Movement!
It is now time for us to gather in City Heights, and show ourselves
we are a movement.
April 9-10, 2011, San Diego taking a stand in City Heights,
will be Cultivating Food Justice. The event starts with a Speak out

What do you have to say about Cultivating Food Justice>
My take is that we are each being called now to
be an Organic Uprising, as much as little organic alfalfa seeds
are calling out for justice. Alfalfa, called in ancient times
the Father of Foods, wants justice. it wants a right to grow
as intended, organically.
STUDIES
THE DANGERS OF ROUND UP READY
Scientists warn of link between dangerous new pathogen
and Monsanto’s Roundup
Urges USDA to rescind approval of genetically engineered alfalfa: “In layman’s terms, it should be treated as an emergency.”
Most dramatically, Huber reported on what he described as a newly discovered pathogen. While the pathogen is not new to the environment, Huber said, it is new to science. This pathogen apparently increases in soil treated with glyphosate, he said, and is then taken up by plants, later transmitted to animals via their feed, and onward to human beings by the plants and meat they consume. The pathogen is extraordinarily small. It can be observed only via an electron microscope operating at 38,000 power of magnification. It has yet to be phenotyped or named, though that work is almost complete and will be announced in a matter of weeks.
Huber warned that ignoring these emerging realities may have dire consequences for agriculture such as rendering soils infertile, crops non-productive, and plants less nutritious. It could also, and apparently already is, he said, compromising the health and well-being of animals and humans.
The Stratosphere of Controversy
Alfalafa
What propelled Huber, glyphosate and biotech crops into the stratosphere of public attention earlier this year was a pending decision on alfalfa (hay) by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA). The “queen of forages,” alfalfa is the principal feedstock for the dairy industry. The USDA was being asked to approve

"SHOW ME THE MOVEMENT!"
"MAKE ME DO IT!"
--PRESIDENT OBAMA SAID
He was referring to the Sustainability
movement, including Cultivating Food Justice.
President Obama was at a dinner a number of years back.
He was asked about his support for the Sustainability movement
that includes Cultivating Food Justice. He said "Make me do it!":
he could not take action on fully supporting the movement until the
sustainability movement showed him its strength.
Then he turned to his wife, Michelle Obama and said,
Baby! It's Your Project!"
April 15, 2010, a couple years later,
Michelle Obama Came to the City Heights,
a city that was singled out to receive 10 million dollars
because of improvements it had already shown that
have the California Endowment a sense that their money
would be well spend investing here.
She visited the New Roots IRC Community Garden to launch her
Let's Move!" Project, a national initiative that includes
an support for exercise, nutrition and gardening.
So where are we now? At the
Fourth Annual Cultivating Food Justice Conference,
we get a readout of where one of the nation's top
sustainability cities lies. The Schedule can be viewed
here.
The context, on a national level, and on a local level,
is that we are in a Food Emergency as well as there are
signs of good progress we want to acknowledge
that are Cultivating Food Justice.
The 2011 Cultivating Food Justice Event, April 9-10, 2011,
gives us a look at what one city is saying,
but where are we nationally?
What are some of the issues we face as a nation?
What are we up against?
How do we further create now a sustainability movement
that includes Cultivating Food Justice for all?
Who are the Non Profits on a national level that are
working to end this Food Emergency?
Who are some of the local Groups in San Diego
to watch, that are a barometer of the Shift toward
Cultivating Food Justice?
These are the topics I will touch on in my presentations
at the 2011 Cultivating Food Justice Event.
In a five minute talk at the Speak Out 9 am-10 am, April 9, 2011
as part of a plenary of many voices being heard, I will inspire
further our movement, and guide those who come to
express themselves.
Be sure to attend the Opening Plenary at the Mid City Gym,
located one block west of Fairmount on Landis Street,
a little south of Wightman, site of the weekly City Heights
Farmers Market.

KENYA UPDATE
Politicians give GMO corn to farmers in Kenya
2004 without them knowing it.
2004
evelopment or goals in domestic food production. The neoliberal regime has chosen to promote imports and support the transnationals that have been taking over the production process.
Monsanto is lying when it implies that its biotechnology can resolve Mexico’s food crisis: it is amply documented that transgenics don’t increase yields. Transgenic corn strains weren’t designed to increase yield. The vast majority of transgenic crops are designed to resist the application of herbicides also manufactured by Monsanto. They actually create more dependency due to the need to buy seed and the contamination of native varieties. They also damage the environment, the economy and human health.
On the other hand, annual corn harvests in Mexico could be doubled if agricultural policy were reformed to support small farmers and to encourage cultivation of more acres in the south and southeast where there is sufficient water. The genetic wealth of Mexican corn could raise production, with farmers saving seed and not required to pay royalties to Monsanto, because the 60 native species and thousands of varieties are adapted to local soils and climates.
Monsanto denies the risk of transgenic contamination of native species, despite evidence that the coexistence of transgenics and biodiversity is impossible. Hiding the truth has been an integral part of Monsanto’s corporate strategies throughout its history, as the company seeks to protect profits at the expense of human health, the environment and general well-being.
ut that has not stopped the critics from questioning the wisdom (and motives behind) introducing expensive farming technology to poor African countries. They also question the implications for human health and the environmental safety of GM food. Anytime you cross poverty, aid, science, and big business, the debates are bound to be endless, and indeed they have been (for a good overview, see recent articles in the Nation , and Economist ). But what is often missing amidst all the rhetoric is a basic look at how the markets might respond to these developments.
GM seeds are not yet legally available in East Africa. Regulations for Kenya’s Bio-Safety Act are still being developed. Nonetheless, Monsanto has been testing GM cotton with KARI for three years already, and plans to launch trials for GM corn next year. Kinyua M’Mbijjewe, the company’s corporate affairs director for Africa, says he expects legislation to be functional soon, and expects the commercial cotton and corn varieties to hit markets even before Gates’ drought resistance maize is ready – probably within the next five years.

CAMPAIGN TO EDUCATE WASHINGTON
ON REAL FOOD SAFETY
VIDEOS ON THE NEW PLANT YOUR DREAM WEBSITE http://plantyourdream.net
THESE ARE OUR AIMS
1-To support mobilization of one Farmers’ Market in our local area, the Hillcrest Farmers’ Market in San Diego. To continue to work with local organic farmers and help them sell more of their produce.
2-To continue to develop a 1/3 acre parcel of land near San Diego State College named the Enchanted Garden Intentional Community Growing Grounds where those who live here and who live around the world may study our process of learning how to keep the beat with nature through learning to live together cooperatively as a household that seeks to live in harmony with the earth. The motto of the house will be Keep The Beet. Through growing a simple beet in a pot, we can regain our beat with nature. Not all in the house garden. Some like to prepare food. Others help with other jobs, or rent. The land, as of January 2010 is being refinanced. A Trust to hold the land is being explored. The Seed Dream would be to leave a museum and park for future generations to learn from this experiment in cooperative living that has been going on since the early 1970′s. The intent is that what we learn here can help others, and Washington, understand and adapt to some of the shifts being asked of all of us now.
3- To develop relationships with those who influence Washington and government. A vast coalition across all political, religious, and philosophical lines has now formed. Mainstream media needs to be reached through bloggers filling the gap where journalism once told all points of view. Elected leaders need to be encouraged to follow the principles expressed in the song “America The Beautiful.”
4- We see the world as we know it now coming to an end. A Shift has already happened. It is for each of us to adapt to the earth and relearn the laws of nature, rather than attempt to further adapt nature to our ways. The source of our economic and health crisis is that we have lost our beat with nature. We can regain the beet through becoming once again a nation of gardeners who live in a world of gardeners. One Pot+One person=You are a Gardener. Start to grow your own food now.
