Keep the Beet in all Her glory
Photo goes here!!!
When Gloria Estefan implored us to "Turn the Beat Around,"
she probably didn’t know that the position of the beat…
or beet…is of little consequence when planting the fine vegetable --
as long as it's not upside down.
According to Leslie Goldman, a San Diego-based activist
passionate about healthy living through the art of drawing
closer to the Earth, the beet is one of the easiest vegetables to grow.
He spreads the word about this concept
through Keep the Beet Media Star –
a mascot of sorts that has drawn attention from locals,
diplomats and celebrities like model
Ashley Van Dyke and actor Ed Begley Jr.,
known for his dedication to the environment.
Keep the Beet and Goldman’s message is traveling
so widely that they earned a piece of cyberspace
last year on The Huffington Post,
continually one of the highest-ranked political websites
on the Net.
Keep The Beet with Hollywood's Top Green
Beet Keeper, Ed Begley, Jr. Keep The Beet
has lived in the Living with Ed garden in
the San Fernando Valley. She will be featured
in future episodes when the show is back
live.

I’m all for progress in producing food…
but getting DNA splice happy with food that is untested is horribly irresponsible. Many of their GM crops routinely create unintended proteins, alter existing protein levels, or even change the components and shape of the protein that is created by the inserted gene. This can cause some interesting and disastrous health problems in humans.
Other major past products from Monsanto include the herbicides 2,4,5-T, DDT, and Agent Orange used primarily during the Vietnam War as a defoliant agent (later proven to be highly carcinogenic to any who come into contact with the solution), the artificial sweetener aspartame (NutraSweet), bovine somatotropin (bovine growth hormone (BST)), and PCBs.
Much constructive conversation took place during breaks,
at the wine reception, sponsored by Mendocino Wine Commission,
and throughout the conference.
And though the lackluster economy
was in evidence this year, the real decision makers
showed up and turned out for the Hollywood Goes Green Conference
to further the dialogue and deepen the work.
And on a very earthy note,
The Enchanted Gardener (aka Leslie Goldman),
who was everywhere at the conference
with KEEP the BEET Media Star, The World's First Talking Beet Plant,
said "I am committed and excited about my project
to create a nation of gardeners."
