The Periodic 24-hour Fast for Health
Post is about fasting and shares some insight from my own experiences lately.

I don't know if I want to go more than one day at a time, but I am starting to see some nice effects from a simple 24-hour water fast. I have noticed a lowered craving for sugar and starches once I come of the fast, after the initial joy of allowing myself a stack of pancakes, that is.;-) In general a fast is supposed to suppress insulin secretion since your pancreas doesn't need to produce much while there is nothing in your digestive tract, so this resets your body's blood sugar and will actually alter your desire for sweets and other types of sugars.
I like the idea of fasting maybe once a week... in addition to the calorie reduction, you get a manage-able time frame that doesn't wear you out or interfere with your normal life, and the resetting effect is recurring and lasts with you for several days until you do it again.
As with any fasting, you have to get fluids or you will do yourself some damage. Many people try a juice fast which gives you some energy, but for my thing which is only one day at a time, I feel like the water fast is safe and gives you the maximum benefit.
I wrote up a web page on the subject of fasting, so if you want to check it out, look here: Health Benefits of Fasting
