A Food Justice Conference
Questions, notes & previous blogs in contemplation of the Food Justice Conference in San Diego.
Date: 3/28/2010 2:30:31 AM ( 14 y ) ... viewed 1898 times I gave considerable consideration for possibly attending their next planning meeting for "San Diego Cultivating Food Justice Conference"
http://www.sdfoodjustice.org/
I needed to know their
Vision plus their
Goals/Outcomes.
Apparently this is theri Mission Statement:
"To gather the diverse San Diego community together to work towards creating an equitable and sustainable food system for all people through education, networking and direct action."
"Definitions":
How do they define "Food Justice" (as well as "equitable and sustainable")?
Is the term distinguished from: "Food Sovereignty"?
Is "Farm Sovereignty" included?
Is Health & Nutrition Sovereignty included?
If these relevant issues are not part of this coming conference then are they willing to consider further inclusions in follow-up conversations?
It appears that "Food Justice" can be considered as a single focus issue (the "right" to "food security").
Yet according to Ray Patel: "... it is entirely possible for people to be food secure in prison or under a dictatorship."
The conference appears to be essentially concerning food security and although it may be a good thing "food security" (as well as the "right" to that) does not necessarily speak to the need for cultivating sovereignty.
It can be argued that "Food Justice" is simply symptomatic of a kind of deficiency in Sovereignty, both individually (for our total well being) and collectively (regarding our local need/s for agriculture, public services (that are properly limited), sustainable business forms, etc. If thought of in these terms then an interconnectedness can be seen and other needs can be addressed that include Farm Sovereignty, Health & Nutrition Sovereignty, Economic Sovereignty, Legal Sovereignty, etc.

Questions: Is it possible to have "food justice" with Industrial agriculture and corporate food control?
Is "food" that is developed largely for corporate profit a "just" system?
Do we have the wisdom to distinguish between simply having food product access and assuring real nourishment for ourselves and others?
Are we willing to consider creating/supporting our own food systems that are designed to nourish us very well and not for corporate profit?
