"Food Safety" Bills Would Destroy Local Farming, CSAs & Farmers Markets.
An appeal "to see the reality of the bills allowing the government to dictate everything done on farms".
Date: 3/17/2010 5:12:54 AM ( 14 y ) ... viewed 1598 times Please let all those who believe the government is doing something toward "farm to school" programs know that the "food safety" bills in the Senate not only would make that impossible, but would destroy local farming, CSAs, farmers markets, and all our desires for a sustainable local food system.
... Corporations are making immense moves to control things now, and control food is the most valuable thing of all - everyone must eat.
The bills, if passed, would be a complete win by exactly those corporations indicted in Food, Inc. and Fresh, the Movie, and get rid of everyone else. This is not an overstatement as it is happening now in Europe. The finest cheese makers in Tuscany are gone, farms in France that have made unique cheeses for generations are disappearing. and who has replaced them? Kraft. 90% of the small hog farmers in Rumania are gone, to be replaced by Smithfied CAFOs. The corporations which make up the EU commission state clearly that they want a million farmers off the land and a consolidation of farming into large, "efficient" farming operations. And the result is loss of small local farming.
People must not be taken in by Michelle Obama's focus on school lunches now when the real battle for decent food for kids (and for everyone's food) is to stop these bills. Her organic garden was also made a focus, making people think things were moving in the right direction, but this was just as Obama was putting Monsanto in charge of all food and farming and food trade positions.
You all have contacts and have means to let people know how serious this is and that it must be won. ...
As to GMOs, though the bills are non-specific, they would allow the government to mandate GMOs (along with pesticides, hormones, antibiotics, irradiation of all foods, etc.) as "science based minimum standards," and the man who is expected to administer any agency set up, is Michael Taylor, VP of Monsanto. He would be able to act and impose penalties on anyone in the country who "holds" food, using warrantless entry, and without judicial review.

as well ... The pharmaceutical industry and agribusiness have written the bills and want an end their smaller, safe, healthy competition - supplements and organic farming.
Please help. Farmers aren't enough to stop this. Help has to come from the urban population who cares about what their families eat and yet has been led to think (after a year of pounding by corporate media putting out stories on contamination) that the FDA needs more power to stop the corporations - not seeing it has immense corrupt power and exactly those dangerous corporations wrote these bills to get control over all food now.
