The more we learn, the more it becomes clear: It's time to clean up our mess.
On Friday, U.S. News and World Report published an article, "A Sea of Plastics," covering new research that shows there are more floating garbage patches around the world than we had previously thought, and those patches extend deeper under the surface. [1]
Also last week, the San Jose Mercury News reported new research showing that there is a lot more plastic in the ocean than we feared. [2]
We can, and must, stem the flow of Styrofoam cups, plastic bags and other garbage into the Pacific. And that's why we're stepping up the Great Pacific Cleanup campaign.
Already many of you have generously donated toward our campaign, and we've raised nearly $5,000. I want to thank those of you who have donated to make our work possible.
If you haven't yet, can you help fund our campaign? Help us reach our goal of $10,000 by midnight on Friday with a donation today.
It's clear that to make progress on a problem like the Pacific Garbage Patch, we need to go big. That's why we've launched a huge effort that brings thousands of Californians together to take the kind of action that can win real results.
To stop the flow of plastic pollution that's littering our beaches and maiming -- and even killing -- ocean wildlife, our Great Pacific Cleanup campaign is aiming high, starting with a statewide ban on single-use Styrofoam take-out containers. After all, nothing that we use for 5 minutes should be allowed to pollute our ocean for 500 years.
We know Californians are ready: In just the last few weeks, more than 17,000 people have taken action to support a ban on Styrofoam.
With your support, we'll keep moving ahead by:
1) Telling the truth about Styrofoam: The lobbyists for the chemical industry are claiming that we can just recycle Styrofoam, despite the fact that Styrofoam is notoriously difficult and expensive to recycle -- which is why less than 1 percent of it is ever recycled. Our Oceans Advocate Gina Goodhill is making this message heard in Sacramento and through the media.
2) Educating public officials: Through our annual Oceans Day event in Sacramento this April, we will bring in ocean scientists to educate lawmakers and their staff about the threats to our ocean waters and wildlife and solutions like the Styrofoam ban.
3) Mobilizing the public: Our canvassers are going door-to-door in communities across the state, educating people about the Pacific Garbage Patch and rallying more people to our cause.
To make all of this happen, we're hoping to raise another $5,000 by midnight on Friday. Can you help by chipping in a donation to the Great Pacific Cleanup?
