AAAS AWARD AND PRIZE WINNERS

These awards were presented at the 176th AAAS
Meetng February 20, 2010, at the
San Diego Convention Center.

It was a privilege and honor to attend this award
ceremony that recognized extraordinary achievements
of the men and women who were the recepients
of the 2009 AAAS awards and prizes.

Among the winners were
Francis S. Collins, M.D.n Ph.D
Director of the National Institutes of Health,
the agency of the U.S. Government.

I first met Dr. Collins on Friday at the Convention Center.
KEEP The BEET Media Star, The World's First Talking Beet Plant,
my constant companion and one of the world's leading
science teachers was concerned that Dr. Collins had not
had the opportunity to eat any healthy fresh fruits.

None were visible down at the many receptions.
She asked me to go out of my way to the Ocean Beach
people's food store. While there I asked the coop member
what was the very best of the large assortment
of diverse apples they had. He recommend an organic
fuji apple. There are not too many local apples growing
in San Diego county, a hotbed for the local, organic food movement.
The apple I was told to offer the esteemed Dr. Collins
came from the state of Washington. Keep the Beet
told me that this would be a meeting of Washington
and Washington D.C.

Dr. Collins has written a wonderful book
called THE LANGUAGE OF GOD.

Here is one review from Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/review/R3HCE146D9Z5GR/ref=cm_cr_pr_viewpnt#R3HCE146D9Z5GR

And what does he do? Using his personal faith in God and his professional expertise as an internationally-known scientist, Collins presents a case for the integration of science and Scripture. Both disciplines require the use of reason and logic, as well as faith and experience. Both must interpret the evidence. In Collins' skillful hands and able prose, "The Language of God" is sure to challenge the intellectually honest reader who will read it with an open mind, rather than a defensive heart.

Reviewer: Bob Kellemen, Ph.D., is the author of "Soul Physicians," "Spiritual Friends," and "Beyond the Suffering: Embracing the Legacy of African American Soul Care and Spiritual Direction."

I am looking forward to reading this book and will
review it here on the PLANT YOUR DREAM BLOG.

Following my first meeting with Dr. Collins on Friday,
I was drawn to the reception for DoSER, the AAAS
Program of Dialogue on Science, Ethics, and Religion.

Guess what?

Dr. Collins was there. He must be a faster walker
than I am. I recorded his words and will post them later.
Dr. Collins was acknowledged for helping in the selection
process of new incoming director of DoSer.

Her name is Jennifer Wiseman. She grew up on a farm
in rural Arkansas where her father raised beef for food.
A nature lover, She has a comet named after her for its
discovery while she was a student at MIT.

Dr. Collins and Ms. Wiseman are both members of the faith
community as well as esteemed scientists. Did you ever
see that film called CONTACT, about a couragous
woman astronaut who has an awesome adventure in
space? Ms. Wiseman reminds me of that woman.
She also works for NASA where she sees before most
of us in society those wonderful awe-inspiring photos
from the Hubbell observatory.

Take a look at the photos that cross Ms. Wiseman's
eyes here. These photos are sparking incredible
spiritual reactions. It is obvious to both Ms. Wiseman
and Dr. Collins that Faith in God, and good Science
go hand in hand.

My visit to that reception inspired Keep the Beet.
She is concerned that there needs to be a dialogue
between Science, Ethics, and Food (DoSEF). I am
being told by the Keep the Beet to work toward
bringing such a Program, under AAAS auspices from
the Seed Dream Stage down to earth.

Keep the Beet points out, that just as there is a lot
of controversy between those in the Faith Communities
and Science, there is also a lot of tension between those
who believe that food is sacred substance given by God
to man. This point of view suggests that food is intended
by God to bring the best out of each person and that
there are unseen influences in local, organic food,
when carefully and lovingly grown by caring farmers.

This point of view believes there are many ethical issues
involved. In THE BOTANY OF DESIRE special on PBS
a number of months ago, it was pointed out that there
were originally hundreds of varieties of apples, but
due to plant breeding and commercial interests,
today there are but a few available on the commercial scene.

Genetic Engineering, when applied to Ag and food production,
is generally called GMO food. By its very nature, some say,
Genetic Engineering limits the gene pool that God
originally gave to humanity.
This is the basis of history reports of the famine in Ireland
when all the farmers grew just one kind of Potato and
made a decision not to grow the thousands that God
gave.

Keep the Beet is one of the world's top gene scientists,
she often tells me. Her favorite plant breeder was
Luther Burbank who is responsible for giving us many
of the foods that Americans enjoyed over the last
50 or more years.

In her recent visit to Ms Eva Becker's tenth grade
science classes earlier in the week, the noted beet
asked me to tell the students to keep studying
and enter science careers. Hello to all the science
students from Hamilton High in Los Angeles,
who read this Plant Your Dream Blog.

Dr. Collins was recognized for his skills as a scientist
and a spokeperson for the ethical and responsible use
of science. He is an outstanding communicator with the public
and policy makers. He has had many very successful
federal scientific initiatives.

Alan I. Leshner, AAAS chief executive office and executive publisher of the journal Science, said: "Francis Collins is perhaps best known for his landmark discoveries of disease genes and for his pioneering leadership of the Human Genome Project. But his contributions to U.S. science and to human welfare extend well beyond specific research areas. He is an exceptionally skilled science communicator who continues to promote broad public engagement with key issues at the intersection of science and society. He has emerged as a compelling role model for the next generation of scientist-citizens."

A physician-scientist, Dr. Collins became the 16th director of the NIH on 17 August 2009, having been nominated by President Barack Obama and unanimously confirmed by the U.S. Senate.

Be careful, Kids, of using Plastic bottles!

TRANSCRIPT

BOB HIRSHON (host):
Putting the heat on plastics…I'm Bob Hirshon and this is Science Update.

There’s been a lot of press lately about the safety of polycarbonate plastics that contain a compound called Bisphenol A. It’s in water bottles, food containers and other consumer products that bear the recycling symbol #7. Neuroendocrinologist Heather Patisaul of North Carolina State University says bisphenol A exposure disrupts reproductive development in both rats and humans.

HEATHER PATISAUL (North Carolina State University):
What happens with our rats is they go through puberty too early, and this mirrors what we’re seeing in girls in the US, where the age of puberty is getting lower.

HIRSHON:
Patisaul says many children eat from plastic dishes and utensils, which increases their exposure to bisphenol A. #7 plastics leech the compound when heated, and the best way to decrease exposure is to keep these products away from the sun and out of the microwave. I’m Bob Hirshon, for AAAS, the science society.

Ms Eva Becker, my niece, is a top science high school teacher
at Hamilton High School in L.A. I visited three of her classes
last Monday. The kids were great. Eva teaches ecology, macro molecules, basic organic chemistry, living cells, health--how energy is used.
cell division, and genetics, and the human system.

The kids loved Uncle Leslie, the Enchanted Gardener and Science Writer.
