THIS IS a GARDEN MANAGEMENT JOURNAL
of the HEALING GARDEN @ SCRIPPS
An addition to the
SCRIPPS CENTER FOR INTEGRATIVE MEDICINE (SCIM)
located in Torrey Pines, La Jolla, California,
the Healing Garden @ Scripps was an ongoing
project that began in the Fall of 2009.
Scripps, one of the world's most popular
network of healing facilities located
in Southern California, was noted
in 2008 as #56 on the list of Fortune 100
companies due to employee satisfaction.
The Healing Garden of Scripps, historically
speaking, became one of the most popular
addtions at SCIM, drawing the attention of
Health Care facility designers from around
the World. Visitors, who came to improve their health
at SCIM, returned over the years.
They often said, "it was the Healing Garden
I remembered most."
The Scripps Center for Integrative Medicine
was Co-Founded by DR. ERMINA GUARNER M.D.
Medical Director, and her friend RAUNI KING PRITTINEN, R.N.,
Director of Planning.
They had long envisoned
the Healing Garden @ Scripps.
The project began as a Seed Dream planted with
a tiny beet seed with strong intention
behind it. The Healing Garden demonstrated
the value of Integrative Medicine, a standard
for Health Reform. SCIM utiliizes
best of conventional Western and Traditional
Healing Arts Modalities. The Healing Garden
extended the very definition of Integrative Medicine
expressing harmony with nature, and the latest
of green technologies, and sustainabilty practices.
The fruits from its trees, the herbs it produced,
the local, organic greens that came from its
fertile soil, were reputed by those who tasted
them to have therapeutic qualities.
The garden was truly an Enchanted
Garden. Those who stepped within
its boundaries were never the same.

Your Enchanted Gardener

DR BERNARD JENSEN, an elder in
the American Sanatorium Tradition,
who throughout his life created natural
environments where his patients came to visit,
once told a story.
There were two heart surgeons involved
in an extensive heart
surgery. They anticipated working for hours.
One turned to the other, paused
and took a deep breath. He said to the other,
"We must take time, we haven't a moment to lose."
This philosophy was intrinsic in the planning
and development of the Healing Garden @ Scripps.
Each step was organically grown. The vision for
the garden began following a very popular address
by Dr. Ermina Guarneri, M.D., at the PACIFIC SYMPOSIUM '09,
and international conference of Eastern and Western pracititioners
of medicine, who came together November 6-8, 2009
at the CATAMARAN RESORT HOTEL and SPA in Pacific Beach.
Dr. Guarneri's keynote address was called
"The Heart Speaks. Are you Listening?" In the audience
that night was Leslie Goldman, AKA Your Enchanted Gardener.
For many years, Leslie created an Altar at the
Pacific Symposium, a very special area across from the
conference registration. Filled with aromas of herbs,
displays of local, organic foods from heart centered farmers,
the centerpiece of this Enchanted Garden Installation
was a magnificient beet plant. The beet, transplanted
from the garden's of CITY FARMERS NURSERY, a co-sponsor
of the installation, there was a sign nearby that said
BEET KEEPERS, RETURN. COME ROOT YOUR DREAM.
Dr. Guarneri was invited to root her dreams.
In this moment out of time, an invitation was extended
by the Co-Founder of the Scripps Center for Integrative
Medicine to the Enchanted Gardener. Dr. Guarneri invited
him to create the Healing Garden @ Scripps.
Leslie arrived at the Scripps Center with camera
in hand on November 19, 2009. He began taking
photos. One of the first things he did was establish
an Altar of rare tropical trees and plants from around the
world. On his first visit to Scripps, his guest was a lanky
nursery man, STEVEN SPANGLER, founder of the
EXOTICA RARE FRUIT NURSERY in Vista, California.
