IC Protocol

I have helped a number of people with IC over the years, myself included.  Years ago I had to see a doctor every other week for DMSO treatments, yearly laser surgery, etc. to keep my IC under control.  Since I discovered what I’ve put down here, I haven’t seen a doctor for my IC in over 5 years.

I did not discover this on my own.  The book “Solving the Interstitial Cystitis Puzzle” written by Amrit Willis was the turning point for me.  Unfortunately, I don’t think you can buy this anymore, that’s why I’m writing this.

Also, I believe that Amrit’s methods were too stringent.  I believe you can get better without having to eat a diet of 80% vegetables.  It’s almost impossible for an American (or anyone else for that matter) to eat that way.  And it’s not necessary.  You can get the same results with the proper supplements and diet control.

An overview of what causes IC and management of symptoms

This is my opinion, I am not a doctor.   But my 18 years of dealing with IC have proved this to me over and over again.

IC is a combination of a few things:

1.    A genetically dysfunctional bladder lining.  There’s nothing you can do about this part  of it.  The lining of your bladder is thin, and doesn’t work properly.  Once you accept   this, you can treat the problem correctly.
2.    Allergies, or sensitivities to substances that cause the lining to become inflamed.
3.    Urine is too acidic to allow the bladder lining to heal on its own.

Disease in general is only caused by a few things.  Infection, genetic predisposition and trauma are pretty much it.  IC is not an infection.  We know genetic predisposition plays a part.  But in truth, I think much of IC’s symptoms are caused by repeated trauma to the bladder lining.  This trauma is caused by the ingestion of substances that irritate the bladder.  And it’s also caused by urine that is too acidic for the bladder lining to handle.  Both of these together serve to make it impossible for the lining to heal itself.

I believe that accepting that your bladder lining is not optimal, and never will be is IMPERATIVE to getting better.  You will not be “cured” of IC.  You can control the symptoms, but you need to accept that if you screw up by eating the wrong thing, or forget to keep your pH up, you will be in pain again.  No, you can’t eat enchilada sauce like your husband can.  Get over it and move on.  Acceptance that this is the way it will be from now on is very important to your recovery.  So many people end up unable to accept this.  My late urologist (who was a trailblazer in his field) gave out a simple list of foods to avoid.  It included regular and diet soda, cranberry juice, spicy foods, coffee, artificial sweeteners and citrus fruits.  He said that he had approximately 20% of his patients get symptom free just with that list.  He told me several patients got well just by eliminating diet soda.  But he would constantly have people in with symptoms who would just not eliminate foods, and they continued to be in pain.  It’s a choice, do you want to be in pain, or do you want to eat salsa (or diet soda, or coffee)?  I’d rather be healthy myself, and it has meant giving up certain foods to do that.

What I’m proposing is a method to allow the lining to heal itself by eliminating the troublesome foods AND getting the urinary pH to be alkaline.  The ICA has a wonderful and very accurate diet for controlling IC, but they do not deal with the urinary pH, and that’s why their method falls short.

So, in a nutshell, what you will need to do is:

1.    Avoid consuming (or being exposed to) bladder irritants.
2.    Raise your urinary pH to above 6.8 at all times.

If you do this, your bladder lining will have a chance to heal itself, and you will get better.  I promise you that this works.
