You come home one day and you see your front door is broken open. You suspect you have been burglarized, so what do you do? There is an awful feeling of being violated as if being raped. They have intruded in your space and you feel sick and you feel scared so what do you do? You freeze on the door steps, as you see the door jam busted in many places, the curtains are all drawn and you have a feeling of "Impending Doom."

1. Do not go inside as the burglars could still be there. Many home owners who bust into their home to see what happens, die on the spot, as they have confronted the burglar face on. If a criminal is faced with persecution or flight, he will do what is necessary. The motto of most burglars is leave no witnesses. So be smart and don't enter the home.
2. Go to a neighbor and call the police. Never try to call the police from your own phone, as you will smudge any finger prints left on the phone or surrounding area. Always go to a neighbor and be safe. It is important to call the police immediately, in case they are still there.
3. Wait for the police to arrive and only then will you go to your home. Try to remember everything you have seen and report all missing items to the police. Ask your neighbors if they saw anything and write down everything you can remember. You will be so frightened, but you must think and act promptly.
4. After the police leave, call your insurance company right away and give them the police report number. Report the theft and the items missing so they can begin the process of reimbursing you. Search for your animals who are very frightened at this point and look to see if the burglars have created any mischief, such as unplugging freezers.
Typically young burglars will unplug the freezers or do harm for no other reason than to cause harm. Look for any money missing as most insurance companies will not reimburse for lost money.
5. The following day, change every door knob in your home and place strong locks on all windows. Notoriously, burglars will return to the scene of the crime. Call a security company and install the best security device you can afford. If the burglars broke into your house and took your house keys, don't forget to change the locks on your car.
Many thieves will steal the keys and return another day to steal the car and enter the home again. As in Ghost the movie with Patrick Swayze. Always think that you are in danger so you can prepare. Install a security camera so you can record who comes and who goes from your home. Now a days many cameras are hid in places and appliances that no one can tell it is a camera.
6. Start a neighborhood watch program and have each neighbor watch out for the other homes. Become unmarked policemen in essence. Stop the thought of being nosey and begin to be alerted about everyone new in your neighborhood. It is better to be too careful then to let someone ever be harmed.
Being burglarized is about as common as having your tooth pulled these days. It is pretty much acceptable that one time in your life this may happen to you. With these simple but important tips, your home and your family can be protected.
