The origin of the name Ramadan

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic Calendar and it is a time of fasting with much history. There is much more to Ramadan, than just fasting, charity and reading the Quran. A history that should make us all tremble, as we remember those famous words from Angel Gabriel.

"Oh Mohammad. You are the Messenger of Allah and I am Gabriel."

The Name Ramadan, is derived from rmcl, Arabic for intense heat, burnt earth and lack of provisions or food. This refers to what Muslims know today, as fasting. Ramadan is an observance, which takes place in the ninth month of the Islamic Calendar, also called Ramadan. Ramadan is considered to be the most blessed month of the year and a month that we anticipate with joy and excitement

It is a month, when the first verses of the Glorious Quran, was revealed to Prophet Mohammad, in the Cave of Hira. The verses were revealed to Prophet Mohammad, by the Angel Gabriel. He was also given, notice of his Prophet-hood. It was during Laylat Al-Qadr, that Angel Gabriel appeared before Prophet Mohammad.

History: In the beginning:

In Islam, we believe that Prophet Mohammad was given the first verses of the Quran, on a date knows as Laylat Al-Qadr, also known as the "Night of Power." The night of power is in the last ten days of the month of Ramadan. We are told to look for those days, on the odd days, meaning the 21st,23rd, 25th, 27th or the 29th days of Ramadan.

Prophet Mohammad, loved to spend his time in retirement, from everyone during the blessed month of Ramadan. He liked to meditate on Allah's creation and mercy. So he would go to the Cave of Hira, to worship Allah in solitude. He would take with him, some barley porridge and water and head for the hills and valleys, in the area close to Makkah. It was approximately 2 miles from Makkah. Privacy and solitude from life's temptations, were necessary to have communication with his lord.

It was during one of his trips to the cave, when the Angel Gabriel came to him and said, "Read." Prophet Mohammad said, "I cannot read." Then Angel Gabriel, took him and shook him hard and said, "Read." Prophet Mohammad again stated, "I cannot read." Then again, Angel Gabriel shook him, till he was so exhausted and he would not let go of him, and he said.

"Read! In the Name of your Lord. Who has created (all that exists), has created man from a clot (a piece of thick coagulated blood). Read! And your Lord is the Most
