Speaking to PEOPLE, Pastor Frank Engelbrecht of Hamburg's St. Catherine Church, said the couple "wanted a very intimate ceremony."
Engelbrecht, who was contacted in the past month to officiate, was selected because of the bride's family's affiliation with his parish, though she has been living in the U.S. for the last 14 years, he said.
Local news reports say the bride wore champagne colored gown, the groom a white suit. Redford, 71, was previously married to Lola Redford from 1958 until their 1985 divorce. They have three surviving children. Szaggars, 51, is an abstract painter whose work has been exhibited internationally.
