Day 1 on 30-day juice fast.

So, I am on Day One of a thirty-day juice fast. Yes. I said thirty days of juice. Me and my juicer might as well start heading to bed together--that's how close we're going to be. I have pounds of produce--fruits and vegetables--in the fridge, on the counters and strewn about the trolley. I have a number of expert recipes in hand, but today I simply mixed my own concoctions.

Beginning last November with my triumphant, but brief, return to the United States, I was reaffiliated with the American diet--this is not to say that the British diet is much better, but my diet in general is much healthier in my own home. Following the Tofurkey Thanksgiving and return of Little Caesar's and Chicago-style pizzas, I found myself in Christmas cookie heaven (hell?) back in Britain. Of course, the month continued on with its sweets, fats and salts, leaving me feeling pretty awful throughout the season. Finally, Husband's birthday took its final toll--with its fried foods and general unhealthiness. (Though, the cakes I made were delightful and simply gorgeous: Lemon Mango and Mexican Chocolate... not too mention all the additions and loveliness that from-scratch, creative baking offers....)

Anyway, since the beginning of last November, long before the trip home, I contemplated juice fasting for a few weeks. In passing, Elisabeth said to me that I should probably fast after returning from the US. It was a joke, but made me realize that was an entirely wise decision.

I had written out a calendar too--beginning my fast on January 5. Nonetheless, after such negative eating for so long, the birthday party served as my gorging finale and today I awoke and said, "Juice."

I have done a juice fast before. I studied them intensely in 2007 and did one for about five days while Kwok was in Thailand. At the time, I was very unhappy--cooped up in the house, jobless, etc--so I think I needed more than a juice fast to help get me into a better state.

While weight loss is a perk of juice fasting, I am juice fasting to gain control of my diet/addictions and to detox. I don't want to need a bowl of popcorn or something worse in front of me while watching a movie. I don't want to reach for a piece of dark chocolate after every dinner. I want to severely limit my dairy intake. Fortunately, my four-year vegetarian diet can at least help me through some of the detoxing effects.(Well, not really help me--it just would have been worse had I been eating meats and other processed animal junk.) I want to feel hungry before I eat and pay better attention to portions. I want to eat a greater variety of fruits and vegetables every day. Mainly, I want to take control of my life and body, feel light, euphoric and in-control.

So, that said, Day One:

Morning was just fine. Drank a large concoction of kiwi, apple, and grapefruit juice.

Afternoon was okay. By late afternoon/early evening, I had juiced a mix of beetroot, spinach, carrot, celery and pepper. I heated it slightly and drank it like a soup broth. (Obviously I'm not adding any salts or spices.)

I started to suffer from some hunger pangs in the early evening despite having a satisfactory amount of caloric intake until that point. These are very common as the glycogen levels in the liver are depleted.

I've been drinking enormous amounts of water too, of course.

Come evening, I'm feeling a small headache and lot of nausea. Kwok was reminded of my detox body wrap which really seemed to work last year. The difference is that then I had the biggest headache of my life that evening with extreme nausea. In comparison, this was easy-going.

I juiced a pineapple and drank that and then took a warm bath which really seemed to sooth me.

Now, I am going to bed.
