Spring around Passover,
I took a retreat with a group of friends
in Joshua Tree.
This is in response to an email
asking for feedback,
and defining our intention for next year
that will have something to do with Joshua.
__
There are many experiences I could reflect on,
but one of the most meaningful came after we broke camp.
I was driving toward the building Park Ranger.
I wanted to get a map.
I saw an overweight man and a woman hiking toward the Ranger station.
I stopped to talk to the Ranger.
The couple came in.
The man was weary. They had been hiking since early morning.
He did not have enough energy to hike back to where they parked their vehicle,
He was asking the ranger how to get back. She said, a cab would cost $50.00.
Then, he asked me if I would take one of them to their vehicle in another part of Joshua Tree.
I was thinking that in this environment we are all family, and need do the natural thing,
help one another.
He suggested that he wait there in the shade, and I take his friend, a woman with me.
I did not want him to be concerned, so I left him my cell phone.
I got into the EG Mobile with his lady friend.
She shared some intimate thoughts about her inner landscape. She had just lost a job
the days before and had come to the desert to clear her head. Her friend, she said, often
overestimated, his own energy.
We finally got to another entrance to the park.
The Park Ranger let me into the gate without charging the $15.00 fee.
We started to drive deeper and deeper into the park.
It was not an overly hot day. There was delightful cloud cover.
As we came deeper and deeper into the park, I became to experience
the terrain. There were Joshua Trees everywhere, and extremely powerful landscape scenes
that were different than Indian Cove.
I finally dropped her off at her car. I could not thank her enough for guiding me to this place.
I would never have allowed myself to enter such a place. IT was the Promised Land.
I got out of the EG Mobile, and walked about twenty feet at most into the desert.
Where there were a few flowers at Indian Cove, here there was a profuse carpet of flowers
and silent sounds of insects and an occasional bird.
The land was untouched by human development. I came into a new and deep appreciation
and reverence for this land that had been preserved from Man having His Way
with the land.
I fell into a Communion with the land. I felt as if I had been called to this place
to See the Landscape. I felt as if the trees themselves wanted me to See them through my
eyes.
Before the lady had left, I was thanking and showering her with Blessing.
I could not thank her for guiding me to this place. In wanting to do another person a favor,
she did a Mitzvah for me.
I stopped a number of times on the way out to take photos.
The Ranger remembered me and did not ask for money at the gate.
As I left that Promised Land, I started to see the impact of development.
I could see where the Consciousness of Man had other ideas. I saw and felt the pain
of an occasional Joshua Tree struggling for Life. I saw a number of dead and dying
Joshua Trees along the side of the road. The closer I came into Civilization, and the
farther I came away from this Very Special Relationship with the Joshua Trees in the Park,
I began to hurt.
I finally burst out crying.
What does this have to do with Moses and Joshua???
Moses saw the Promised Land.
He hit the rock. He did not go gentle in his need to find water.
He was feeling duress.
Gas prices were about $10.00 a gallon traveling through the desert,
and the people were giving him a lot of Tzuris.
he took it out on God. He forgot his Holy Relationship with the Land
and how it Provides.
Moses saw the Promised Land, but he never entered.
Joshua took the people into the Promised Land.
Who are we? Are we standing with Moses or Joshua?
Can we be both? What is being asked to die inside us,
what live?
Are we the First Born who get to be Reborn and Step into the Promise
of the Enchanted Garden?
What is being asked of us?
What do we need to leave behind?
What are we asked to take with us to see the Sacred Relationship
to the each other and the land?

MESSAGE FOR ME FROM THE JOSHUA TREE
The message of the Joshua tree is that
I cannot keep growing in the direction I was going.
I have to grow in a new direction.

THE SIGNATURE OF THE JOSHUA TREE
BY Patricia Kaminski
"The flowering of any plant
always involves extraordinary receptivity
to new cosmic forces.
But in the case of Joshua Tree,
this activity is both a culmination and a new beginning.
Once flowers appear on a branch,
it can no longer continue growing.
The plant must seek a completely new direction.
This unique flowering signature
is the central distinguishing quality
of the Joshua Tree."

Flower Essence Society/Services
Dr. Pedro Sastriques
has used Joshua Tree flower essence for many patients
at his clinic at the Psychiatric Hospital of Havana,
Cuba. His words give an excellent summary
of the essential qualities of this flower essence:
The hidden contact with the psychic world of our Generational Tree
is not perceived, even though it is present
in each moment. Joshua Tree allows us to find it.
This essence will clean family patterns
that are sclerotic and obsolete, that darken the soul,
forcing us to drag a negative karma originating
from our ancestors. Joshua Tree will help us be reborn
with a higher level of consciousness
and a joyful hope for a new beginning."

FROM A RESEARCH REPORT
BY DONATELLA TORDONI
Each flower of the tree results
in a new branch that grows in a different direction.
"It is my sense
that the development of the earthward,
bending gesture in this tree reminds
the Human Soul that spiritual knowledge
must include what is experienced in life on earth.
Each branching of the tree
is a picture of how the “I”
integrates the individual human aspects
of the life biography into a more comprehensive
spiritual consciousness.
It is only within the core-self identity
that this awareness can take place.
In this, lies the real meaning of human evolution
as well as the purpose of incarnation on Earth."
