Local Organic Farmers: Endangered Species in San Diego?
Joe Rodriguez Jr, AKA Joe the Farmer,
is a symbol for the locall organic family farming
who Never, Never, Gave Up. His family have been
raising food in San Diego County since 1958,
organically since 1986.
They have survived hail, fire, heat, and cold.
The question is, can they survive the imposed
water regulations that are cutting back the amount
of food they can grow.
Last year at this time, Joe was gearing up to
grow fields from of Ripe locally organic strawberries
and his lettuces for Whole Foods Market.
This year 15 of his 40 acres are fallow
to prevent getting severe fines should he
go beyond the imposed 30% cutback in water.
This year, Whole Food Market Hillcrest has
no locally grown food from Joe Rodriguez,
but for a lettuce here and there, or maybe
a single basket of strawberries..
He cannot afford to grow it.
Rally 'Round the Beet, 6:15 PM
Sunday, 4/20/08 at the WorldBeat Cultural Center
2100 Park Blvd., Balboa Park, will call attention
to the needs of Joe and all is local farmer friends.
Please be there, and bring a drum.

Joe Rodriguez Jr, AKA Joe the Farmer is a symbol for the local organic farming family
that never, never gives up. Joe is concerned about 30% water usage cutback allowances.
15 of his 40 acres have been left fallow to prevent severe fines. Joe the Farmer and
all his San Diego Farmers are destined to have a Comeback. That Comeback depends
on you. Bring a Drum! Come Rally 'Round the Beet 6:15 PM, 4/20/08 WorldBeat Cultural

_____
I am headed in the direction of KPBS.
KPBS stands for Fairness in Reporting.
KPBS stands for getting more than than the
surface drops of a story.
KPBS stands for going deeper into the Crack of things,
the Crack between people, deeper into the Crack
that imagines that because a Delta Smelt Fish is endangered
and we want to save it, that somehow we are not Endangering
Home Land Security in San Diego.
If we keep making it hard for local farmers to
wake up and say Happiness is Organic each day,
we will have no local organic farmers.
If we keep asking for more and more organic food,
but at the same time imagine we can get our supplies
from other countries, we are heading for more energy
dependence, not energy independence.
It is not enough to save the Delta Smelt
an endangered fish that leaves in the vacinity of the Capital
and our Legislators.
I do not know how real this water shortage is.
I am a gardener.
If I had the resources and the support to collect all the rain water
that went down the gutter in front of our house this Winter,
I would have enough water to water every plant on this 1/3 acre
three times fold.
Farmers are not the ones who have time to sit down with the
Powers that Be and find out what to do about this Water Shortage.
Farmers are not Beaurocrats.
They do not have all the time in the world to be doing all
the paper work that it takes to be a growing food in San Diego County.
Yes, they play by the rules.
They play by the Laws, and they are here to Uphold
Laws that most of us break.
Dr. Bernard Jensen (1908-2001) is in his Centennial Celebration
year this 2008. People are coming from all over the world
June 6,7,8 to the Town and Country Convention Center
to drink from the waters of his wisdom and honor what this man knew.
Dr. Jensen knew the Law.
He Lived by the Law.
He knew more Laws for Living that most of us have ever
had a chance to hear.
We do not hear thie Laws he knew on popular TV,
we hear, see, and smell them in the garden.
Dr. Jensen was 92 when he Left this plane.
I would not use the words die or passaway
in reference to Dr. Bernard Jensen.
What he stood for were Laws,
Laws of Nature that cannot pass away
Dr. Bernard Jensen understood water.
He understood the need of those he saw in his office for good water.
He knew the power of locally grown vegetables
to be medicine. He knew the kind of water
that is biochemically alive and comes up through
locally grown organic vegetables made into juices,
or that is transforms by sprouts and greens.
Dr. Bernard Jensen was in the same school of thought as the
Father of Modern Medicine Hippocrates.
Both Hippocrates and Jensen knew the Law.
They knew their Vegetables.
They knew their Beets.
They both taught,
Get to know your Beet
before you have to go see your Doctor.
That is almost a Law,
a little known Law.
IF we do not Keep the Beet,
Keep up an active relationship with things that grow,
develop a gardener more than a mechanic outlook on life,
we will be spending our time watching Dancing with the Stars
when we could be out on the porch smelling the fragrance of
now gone Orange Blossoms.
We are intended by birth to be gardeners.
We are intended by birth to be Stars--
Orbs in Orbit--as Jensen would say.
That is why we are doing
Rally 'Round the Beet
6:15 PM, Sunday, April 20
at the WorldBeat Cultural Center.
The event follows Carolyn Chase's San Diego Earth Fair,
in its 19th year. It follows Makeda Dream Cheatoms Multi-cultural Earth Day.
It follows the appearance of the Conscious Goods Alliance Bus
in the Pan American Plaza area--sort of near the Gymnasium.
100 Drums will be there at 6:15 PM.
if you put it on your calendar now to be there.
I am not into fighting for water.
I am into informing. I am into creating a Moment of Awakening.
A whole lot of us need to start putting our Lives together now
as Gardeners. One Person+Growing a Beet in one Pot.
You are a Gardener! One Pot per person, that is all I am asking!
A new outlook on Life is needed by many of us
and will come out of each of us entering Plant Parenthood.
We need to realize that we can be traveling around this Country
from Whole Food Market to Whole Food Market with used Vegetable
oil propelling our gas tank. That is how that Conscious Goods
Alliance Veggie Powered Bus is rolling along!
We can find solutions to keeping the Delta Smelt off the
Endangered List without putting Local Organic Farmers and their
Conventional Kin on the Endangered Species List.
We simple have to find new solutions.
It's the Law.
