2008 Natural Products Expo West proves ‘organic’ and ‘sustainability’
are hot, bucking economic trends
Country’s largest natural foods and healthy products trade show
prepares for record number of exhibitors and attendees
BOULDER, Colo. (Jan. 28, 2008) — Natural Products Expo West (www.expowest.com) is set for more than 300,000 square feet of natural and organic foods and personal care, healthy ethnic, sustainable living and alternative medicine products, with more than 1800 exhibitors showcasing their offerings. The trade show, produced by New Hope Natural Media, a division of Penton Media, will draw more than 47,000 attendees March 13-16 to the Anaheim Convention Center in California.
Consumer interest in healthy products continues to grow. Natural products sales in the United States grew 9.7 percent across all retail and nonretail channels in 2006, topping more than $56.7 billion [up from $51 billion in 2005], according to The Natural Foods Merchandiser. For the first time since 1999, the mass market saw double-digit growth of natural products sales at 10.5 percent.
“The natural, organic and healthy products industry is showing absolutely no sign of slowing down. . . compared to national economic trends, we’re on fire,” said Fred Linder, president of New Hope Natural Media. “Natural Products Expo West will again be the innovation and new product destination for retail buyers.”
The theme for this year’s Natural Products Expo West is a “World of Goods,” a timely topic that speaks to consumers’ increasing demand for more environmentally sensitive and socially conscious products in the marketplace. Now in its 28th year, the show will feature a magnetic lineup of speakers for today’s food industry pundits, prophets and pioneers: New York Times Magazine best-selling author Michael Pollan, winner of the James Beard Award for best food writing for his book The Omnivore’s Dilemma, will deliver the keynote address March 15 — ensuring lively discourse about food trends and philosophies; bestselling cookbook author Mollie Katzen and culinary stars Chef Lala and Top Chef’s Tre Wilcox will give cooking demonstrations; and supermarket guru and Today Show food correspondent Phil Lempert will host a retailer game show Friday March 14.
While at Natural Products Expo West, attendees will glean a look at the full value chain of the healthy products industry through various co-produced events:
§ SupplyExpo: Trade show featuring cutting-edge ingredients and technologies for those involved in R&D, product management, purchasing or strategic leadership in the health and nutrition industry.
§ Nutracon: The health and nutrition industry’s premier science and innovation event will feature presentations about synbiotics, weight loss ingredients, antioxidants, probiotics, cognitive function and organics. Additional registration fee required.
§ Fresh Ideas Organic Marketplace: A business-to-business event in a farmers’ market atmosphere for buyers and sellers of certified organic products, Thursday, March 13, 12:30-5:30 p.m.
§ Healthy Baking Seminar: Baker and food manufacturer presentations on formulating healthful bakery foods, tips, trends and more, Thursday, March 13, 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.
Natural Products Expo West continues its green initiatives with wind and solar energy powering the Anaheim Conventional Center through offsets and sustainable green-building materials for show structures and exhibits. Additionally, attendees will be eligible for green-powered travel options through the purchase of renewable energy certificates via registration.
