More people are realizing the benefits of having a home gym. Before building one for your home, take the time to develop a solid plan for it. These six tips will ensure you have an efficient and functional space.

1. Leave Open Floor Space

Even if you use a lot of equipment, you want to leave plenty of open floor space in your home gym. There are a few reasons for this plan. First, it helps ensure you can move about safely without tripping on a weight set or resistance bands. It also gives you room to roll out a mat for stretching and floor work.

Flexibility is an important part of any workout. It can help you avoid injury and may boost performance. Additionally, a good flexibility routine can help you improve balance and range of motion in everyday activities.

2. Use Vertical Storage

Instead of stacking everything in the corner, check out some of the vertical storage options. Metal racks and wall hooks can help you stay organized without taking up a lot of room.  Ceiling-mounted racks are another great tool when designing a gym. They will let you keep the floor clear of clutter while still keeping equipment at hand.

While going vertical will clear up floor space, you might want to include a step ladder in your design to ensure you can reach all the gear stashed up on the highest shelves. Plus, you can lay out flat on the floor and use it for agility drills when you want to change things up.

3. Invest in High-Quality Weight Racks

You do not want to leave dumbbells or weight plates lying around on the floor. They can quickly become a tripping hazard and cause an injury. However, you also don't want to skimp and fall for cheap weight racks for your workout room. They will wear out much quicker than a high-quality set, plus they present a risk of hurting someone when they do fail.

Instead, look for racks that are designed specifically for exercise equipment. A good weight rack will be rated to handle the weight and abuse you will likely dish out.

4. Make Sure You Have a Good Wi-Fi Signal

This may seem like an extra, but a good Wi-Fi signal is pretty much a necessity in modern gyms. With one, you can stream your favorite music to stay motivated or watch a demonstration of a new exercise or technique. A good internet signal also means you can move along to exercise videos to keep things fresh.

5. Use Baskets To Organize Smaller Equipment

Storage is an important part of a home gym. If you tend to use a bunch of smaller equipment, like bands, balls or foam rollers, grabbing a few sturdy baskets can help you stay organized. Look for a few different sizes so you can accommodate a range of equipment. Baskets are also great for keeping gym towels or cleaning supplies at hand.

6. Think About Average Temperatures

If you are investing in a detached backyard workout studio, be sure to consider the average temperatures where you live. For most people, that will mean installing a heating and air conditioning system for comfort.

Climate control goes beyond feeling comfortable. If you push yourself too hard in extreme heat, you may find yourself suffering from dehydration or heat stroke. The cold can be just as dangerous by making it difficult for your body to maintain a constant temperature.

Taking time to plan your home gym before you start moving in equipment can help ensure it serves your needs. It is a good idea to leave enough open floor space, invest in quality storage items and have systems in place to maintain a comfortable and safe temperature.
