Mentioning “public relations planning” to a new business might induce visions of spending big bucks with a large corporate firm, but that doesn’t have to be the case. In fact, pushing a huge campaign too early in the game might lead to issues such as not having enough products to meet demand and losing client trust. New businesses do not have to spend a lot of money upfront to get started with good PR strategies. Here are four ways you can start planning on your own.

1. Create a Cloud-Based Media Kit

A media kit is a collection of facts about your company that you put together for the press. It gives journalists and editors all the information and visuals they need to write about your business. Almost every larger company has one and having one will make you appear more polished and professional. In the past, it was a physical packet of information that could be handed directly to a reporter. These days it’s as simple as keeping a PDF version of your kit, as well as a selection of high-resolution photos, on your public cloud server (which should be part of your business's hybrid cloud strategy). Include a link to your media kit whenever you pitch a story about your firm or yourself as an expert.

2. Determine Your Audience

One of the most important aspects of any good PR plan is knowing who your target audience is. Do you primarily serve other businesses? If so, you also want to recognize where they and their clients are attempting to go with their own projects. In this case, you should consider what their businesses require to thrive and show them how working with you may help them achieve those goals.

If you focus more on service to consumers, you need to get inside the heads of the people who use your services. Do they choose your business because you're the most affordable option for them? Are you more convenient to use than the competition? Is it for prestige, or because there are no other options? All these considerations affect your connection to the consumer and should be kept in mind while designing your PR game plan.

3. Establish Yourself as an Expert in Your Industry

One way to get your business mentioned in the media is to promote yourself as an authority in your industry or sector. For example, if you are an accountant, you could create a list of suggestions for business owners heading into tax season. Send the piece to financial and money reporters at magazines, newspapers, and other media, so that they can use you as an expert in one of their own "tax advice" stories while they're writing about tax season. You're not just marketing yourself when you develop prospective story ideas for the media; you're also offering a relevant, helpful story idea to make life easier for them.

4. Be Active in Your Community

Supporting local nonprofits, whether by helping to sponsor an event, maintaining a booth at local festivals and fairs, or organizing a team to participate in fundraising, may help your new business get its name out into the community and into people's thoughts. These events frequently receive local news coverage and provide an excellent opportunity for media exposure. They also give you a chance to interact directly with your customers, demonstrating your company's involvement in their daily lives. If you make your organization a part of your city's culture, you'll reap a slew of benefits, including increased word-of-mouth sales, local support during difficult times, and greater future PR chances.

These are all easy ways to get you started on your company’s public relations journey. Also, don’t forget that the definition of media is changing and expanding. Traditional news outlets are no longer the exclusive source of information. There are now a variety of social influencers, online reports, and podcasts that may assist you in promoting your company.
