Building good habits into your daily routine is a great first step in helping to establish a healthy lifestyle. Practicing self-care can not only be beneficial to physical and mental wellness but fun and relaxing as well. Here are three simple self-care habits you can do to support good health.
1. Eat Healthily
Food supplements are a good way to supplement your diet, like these vitamins and minerals supplements from USANA. Eating a healthy diet is one of the most important things that you can do to ensure that you are receiving the correct amounts of nutrients on a daily basis. According to Purdue University's Nutrition Education Program, there are certain food groups that you should aim to consume every day or nearly every day, if possible.
Vegetables
Vegetables are a group that includes everything from green leafy items like kale to starchy foods such as potatoes. You can purchase vegetables that are either fresh or frozen, whichever is more convenient for you. If preparation time is a barrier to you eating healthier, consider buying packages of vegetables that have already been cut and washed.
Fruits
Like vegetables, fruits can be enjoyed either fresh or frozen. If you opt for frozen or canned fruits, watch for and try to avoid varieties that have added sugars or syrups, since fruits are already quite sweet on their own and extra sweeteners add little nutritional value.
Proteins
This group includes foods such as fish, chicken, and beef. Aim to buy lean cuts of meat and watch for the sodium and fat content of sliced deli meats. Plant sources of protein such as tofu, tempeh, nuts, and beans can also be cheap and easy to prepare.
Dairy
Dairy products provide essential nutrients such as calcium and vitamin D. Incorporate cheese and yogurt into main meals like pasta dishes. Consider drinking fortified plant milk if you cannot or chose not to consume dairy.
If you have a poor diet for any number of reasons, including illness or inability to chew certain foods, you might want to consider taking a supplement to make sure you are getting all of the vitamins that you need for good health.
2. Exercise Regularly
Exercise is important for good health, and it can be fun as well. There are a wide variety of activities that you can partake in, depending on your skills, abilities, and preference between working out alone or with a partner. Some activities to consider are:
-
Tennis, which is usually played outside and requires at least one other person to play
-
Running or jogging, which can be done solo or in a group and has a relatively low barrier to entry, usually only requiring a proper outfit and a safe area to run
-
Yoga, a low-impact workout that is often used as a form of meditation
-
Rock climbing, which can be fun if you seek something a bit more adventurous
The best exercise to do is the one that you will stick with, so try a few different activities and see which one is most enjoyable and beneficial to you.
3. Practice Good Sleep Hygiene
Getting a good amount of quality sleep each night is necessary for maintaining good health. Some of the things that you can do to ensure that you sleep well include:
-
Avoiding television, computer, and smartphone screens for around an hour before you want to fall asleep
-
Covering windows that let excess light and noise into the bedroom
-
Falling asleep and waking up around the same time each night and morning, even on weekends and during vacations
-
Using a fan or white noise machine if you have difficulty falling or staying asleep if the room is too silent
-
Limiting or avoiding the consumption of caffeine and alcohol close to bedtime
