Eating healthier crosses almost everyone's minds at one point or another, but figuring out how to actually do it often stops people in their tracks. Nutrition can feel like a complicated maze of fad diets and differing opinions with everyone telling you what works best. To decipher what might actually help you achieve your goal while supporting your body's unique needs, it's key to know some nutrition basics. Here are a few tips that can be generally applied to improving any diet.

Limit Sugar

We all know sugar is bad for us, but not everyone knows exactly why. The main problem is when you eat sugar, your body turns it into fat and stores it for later. This can cause weight gain and leave you feeling generally sluggish. It also causes your blood sugar levels to spike and crash periodically throughout the day, which leaves you craving carbs, sweets or salty things to bring it back up.

If you're trying to improve your diet, it's smart to limit sugar. This includes candy, sugary drinks and sweet treats. Strictly monitoring your sugar intake or eliminating it altogether is a great way to improve your nutrition. If you do eliminate sugar, be ready to experience things similar to Thrive side effects, such as mood swings and headaches.

Enjoy Nuts and Seeds

You've might have noticed people who take pride in their diets are often munching on trail mix or nuts throughout the day. That's because nuts and seeds have countless health benefits. They're high in healthy fats, which can help you to feel fuller longer, as well as containing lots of proteins, vitamins and minerals that are essential to the healthy function of your body. They've even been shown to help prevent type 2 diabetes and heart disease!

Nuts are served up in tons of different ways, including raw, roasted, salted or in mixes with dried fruits.

Avoid Processed Food

Ideally, you want to always eat real food. This means staying away from things like fast food, packaged goods, canned foods or frozen meals. These are often loaded with preservatives or chemicals to keep them preserved over time and those substances can cause harm to your body and immune system.

Additionally, they typically contain added sugars and chemicals to make them extremely palatable, which makes it very easy to overeat or indulge too much in them. Cutting these out of your diet can allow your body to purge the toxins those foods were putting in and make room for nutrients that support your health.

Drink the Right Coffee

Some diets will tout that coffee isn't healthy, but it all depends on what your health goals are. When you drink quality coffee, there can actually be lots of health benefits because coffee beans are high in antioxidants. The key to reaping those benefits is not to crowd them out with negative substances. Instead of pouring sugary sweeteners and creamers into your cup, try enjoying your coffee as is. If you can find a type of bean that you enjoy, you won't miss the sugary added flavor you used to use.

Drink Water

You'd be surprised how many people spend their whole day dehydrated and don't know it. Most people don't drink enough water. It might be because there are so many other options nowadays or because we're just too busy to stop and take a swig of H20, but whatever the reason it can cause long-term health problems. Staying hydrated keeps your cells healthy and active and can improve your focus and mood.

An easy way to start drinking more is to buy a reusable water bottle and keep it with you at all times. Fill it up in the morning and do your best to get through it by bedtime. Before long you might be filling it up multiple times a day because drinking water will have become a new healthy habit.
